Gambling in Kentucky

Sports Betting Bill approved on March 31st, 2023

Kentuckians can bet on sports at track locations, licensed online bookmakers, and apps. Kentucky aims to launch a regulated sports betting industry by December 2023.

No Casinos

Kentucky does not allow for casinos to operate in the state.

The Mecca of Horse Racing

Kentucky is home to Churchill Downs, home of The Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Betting Facts

Kentucky has officially legalized sports betting! The approval of HB 551 means that you can now place bets legally from anywhere in Kentucky. Starting June 28th, 2023, the new law will be in effect, allowing sports betting to begin within six months, just at the right time for the NFL season!

Once the market goes live, you will be able to wager on pro leagues and college sports, such as the NBA, the MLB, or the NCAAB. That said, betting on school events and casino gambling will remain prohibited. If you are at least 18 years old and located within the state borders, you will have access to both retail betting locations and online US sportsbooks.

While waiting for the official launch of sportsbooks in Kentucky, you can continue betting on your favorite sports with the best offshore bookmakers.

No Casinos in the Bluegrass State

Kentucky is not home to any casinos – commercial, Native American or riverboat. There is nothing under consideration to legalize casinos in the state. The state does not prohibit the use of online betting sites that have casinos and poker rooms.

If you’re a resident of Kentucky, your best bet is to visit one of the three racetracks that provide casino-like slots. These racetracks include Churchill Downs in Louisville, Red Mile Gaming & Racing located in Lexington, and Kentucky Downs in Franklin.

Alternatively, as long as you are at least 18 (the legal age for all forms of gambling in Kentucky), you can sign up for an offshore online betting site. We have researched and compared the options available in Kentucky, and only list the best Kentucky online betting sites.

Horse Racing Reigns King in Kentucky

While Kentucky is generally viewed as an anti-gambling state, horse racing in the state is a massive deal. The state is home to the biggest race in the world – The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs – as well as smaller facilities running races through the spring and summer months.

Kentucky bettors who want to bet on “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” or other horse races have two options. You can head down to one of Kentucky’s horse racing tracks (the only physical locations in the state for live or offtrack betting) or use an online betting site with a racebook.

The sports betting websites we recommend on this page, also have racebooks. We only recommend reliable and safe racebooks for the people of Kentucky.
