The MLS season will typically start in late February/early March, with play running all the way until November/December. Play is of course stopped at times for international breaks, but only for a short period of time. Always remember, too, that there’s a postseason in the MLS to decide the league champion. It’s not just the team with the most points at the end of the season.
In the MLS, seven teams from each conference will make the playoffs (14 total), with the No. 1 seed in each conference receiving a first-round bye. That results in an automatic berth to the conference semifinals. It’s a single-loss elimination in the playoffs, so if you win, you advance to the next round, while a loss means you’re sent home packing to watch the rest of the postseason.
When you are ready to make a wager for the MLS, popular bets of course feature single games, but making a futures bet on who you think will end up winning the MLS Cup is also a way to make the entire campaign that much more interesting. For bets on single games in the middle of the season, it will always be important to pay attention to who has the home-field advantage, while also breaking down the injury reports provided by each club.
While the regular season is a ton of fun, things really reach a new level for the MLS playoffs. In total, 14 teams will remain in contention to bring home the MLS Cup. You’ll always want to consider going with a stronger-seeded team. Typically, a No. 1 or No. 2 seed will have the best chance of winning it all.
For example, if the Seattle Sounders sneak their way into the playoffs with a No. 7 seed, the chances of them going on multiple upsets to win the MLS Cup isn’t very likely. A No. 1 seed will have a first-round bye, plus a home-field advantage in the playoffs. That’s enormous for a team hoping to bring home the title at the end of the year.
Regardless of which one of the recommended sportsbooks at MLS Betting Sites you choose, so many different odds will pop up for the MLS season. It’s what makes things even more fun. At any point during the campaign, or before things get started, you’ll be able to make a bet. But, what exactly can you bet on?
A futures bet is when you place a wager on something to happen down the road. For the MLS season, the most popular futures bet would be to pick the MLS Cup winner far in advance. So, if you think weeks before the postseason starts that DC United will end up winning the title, that’s a bet you can get in. You can pick any team to win the MLS Cup as a futures bet.
A prop bet is an unusual, out of the ordinary bet that differs from a typical futures or straight-up bet during the season. You might see odds for how many goals a star player finishes with for the year, or if the president will show up to the MLS Cup. These are only two examples of the many prop bets you’ll be able to find.
An over/under for MLS is when you place a bet on a certain number of goals or wins in a season for a team. Two examples of goals would be for a single match, or how many total goals a player will score during the entire season. For the match example, say the over/under for a game between Seattle and Portland is set at three goals.
If you take the over, the two teams would need to combine for four goals for you to win your bet. If they score three goals, it will be a push, while two goals and anything less means you’ll lose the bet.
We can’t stress enough the importance of paying attention to standings in the table and injuries when it comes to betting on MLS action. If NYCFC is at the top of the table and is set to host the ninth-placed Montreal Impact, the chances of Montreal pulling off a win would be slim to none. While you might like them, betting money on Montreal to win that match wouldn’t be a wise idea.
For injuries, if a team is set to be without multiple starters for a big match, you’d want to stay away from them as well. So, if the NY Red Bulls are missing three starters ahead of a visit to Toronto FC, you wouldn’t want to bet on the Red Bulls to win that match. The odds wouldn’t be in your favor.
Betting on the MLS is incredibly simple, especially if you use one of the sportsbooks we recommend here at Sports Betting Sites. With these outlets, you’ll find everything laid out quite clearly for you. When you do decide to bet, the odds will always be easy to dissect too.
For each game, you can bet on an outright winner (or for it to end in a draw), the over/under for total goals scored, and much more. If you want to get in a futures bet, you can pick the MLS Cup winner and so much more.
Looking at the entire field, picking one team to win the MLS Cup is easier said than done, though. But, if you decide to place that bet a month or two before the season even starts, you’ll see a great payout if the team you picked ends up coming through for you.
The MLS playoffs have given us some unforgettable battles to determine the MLS Cup winner. Each season, the competition feels wide open, though certain teams inevitably enter the postseason as favorites, especially if they’ve dominated during the regular season.
The MLS Cup winners from 2009 to 2023 are as follows: Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids, LA Galaxy, LA Galaxy, Sporting Kansas City, LA Galaxy, Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, Toronto FC, Atlanta United, Seattle Sounders, Columbus Crew, New York City FC, Los Angeles FC, and Columbus Crew.
The MLS field is wide open each season
While teams like the Galaxy and Sounders have gone on to win the MLS Cup more than once, you’re always going to see play be extremely competitive during the regular season and in the playoffs. That’s what makes the MLS so intriguing, and even more fun to bet on. Still, if you have a team in mind as to who will be the champions, get a bet in.
MLS is always fun to bet on
MLS never disappoints when it comes to entertainment. This is why betting on the season as a whole or specific games makes things even more entertaining. Imagine weeks before the campaign starts, you pick Seattle to win the title. In the MLS Cup Final, things are tied 0-0 in the 90th minute against Toronto.
Then in stoppage time, the Sounders score the cup-winning goal on an incredible free kick. Not only would they be the league champions, but that late goal would also result in you winning your bet. That’d be quite the feeling.
