One of the final world-class golf tournaments in 2022, this year’s Hero World Challenge is set up for another classic in the Bahamas. Taking place each December, the tournament features a small number of top-ranked golf professionals. For this year’s tournament, the field features a handful of significant championship winners to some of the most dynamic young players in the sport. In the 2021 edition of the Hero World Challenge, Victor Hovland was able to edge runner-up Scottie Scheffler by one stroke and score a 270 overall. Moreover, 2018 winner and 2019 runner-up, Jon Rahm returns as one of the favorites in the field. With the winner taking home a $1,000,000 prize, this should be one of the year’s finest final showcases.
In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of the top three contenders in the field, along with a prediction on who will win, and more thoughts about golf wagering.
A former World No.1 player, the Spaniard has had a decent 2022 PGA Tour season. Back in May, he was able to win the 2022 Mexico Open with a one-stroke win over Tony Finau, Kurt Kitayama, and Brandon Wu. Later in the year, he was able to knock down a victory in October at the Acciona Open de España which was his third title overall at the event. While he was unable to win any major championships this year, he still is coming off a PGA Tour Player of the Year performance in 2021. Could Rahm end the year with a bang?
As recently as October of this year, Scheffler has been the World No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Rankings. Moreover, he also is the winner of this year’s Masters Tournament. For his resounding success in 2022, Scheffler was named the 2022 PGA Tour Player of the Year back in September. With four total wins on the year, including the Masters, Scheffler has been the world’s best player in 2022 and will be looking to finish the year on a high note. The one thing to note here is that while he started the year with four wins in three months, he has not won a tournament since April.
Our final contender spotlight, Schauffele has won seven times already on the PGA Tour and is one of the most dynamic young players in the sport. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist in the men’s individual golf event, the 29-year-old has put together some strong performances in 2022. With three different PGA Tour titles this year, including winning the Genesis Scottish Open back in July, Schauffele is definitely one of the most consistent young guns on the PGA Tour. If he had been able to win a major championship this year he would have pushed Scheffler as perhaps the best in the world.
Prediction: Featuring a world-class field, the 2022 Hero World Challenge could come down to the wire. With that in mind, a strong talent like Schauffele is a great choice to win given his penchant for victory already in 2022.
