world cup predictions

Kicking off later this year, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be the 22nd running of the FIFA World Cup competition. With this being the first-ever World Cup held in the Arab world, all eyes will be on the tournament to see who will be the new kings of soccer. France won the 2018 tournament after defeating Croatia, 4-2 in the final, and will return as one of the favorites to take home the crown again.

Below, SBS will break down who the top three contenders are positioned to take home the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and also a dark horse candidate that could make some noise.

The No. 1 Contender: France (Odds: +607)

The reigning FIFA World Cup champions, France will be aiming for its third World Cup title in 2022. In late 2021, the French national team made history when it became the first European national team to have won all possible senior FIFA and confederation competitions after they won the UEFA Nations Leagues in October. A strong squad, the French will be led by a trio of elite players in goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (136 caps), Olivier Giroud (46 international goals, second all-time for France), and another striker, Antoine Griezmann (42 goals, third all-time). Another player to watch out for would be Kylian Mbappé who won the Best Young Player award during the 2018 World Cup.

The No. 2 Team: Brazil (Odds: +570)

A dynamic power in the world soccer landscape, Brazil has an excellent chance to take home the World Cup in 2022. The most successful national team in the history of the World Cup (they have five championships), the Brazilians are seeking their first title since 2002. With a stacked roster spearheaded by Neymar (116 caps and 70 goals), Brazil will rely heavily on its powerful offense to overwhelm opponents. Coming off a disappointing sixth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup, Brazil will be very motivated to bring home the World Cup crown 20 years after their last title.

Third Best Contender from the Field: England (Odds: +724)

Recognized as the oldest national team in football, the English national team has all the makings of a potential World Cup champion. Currently ranked as the fifth-best team in the FIFA rankings, England is coming off a strong performance at the 2020 UEFA Euro tournament. The English were able to knock off Germany, Ukraine, and Denmark which helped them advance to the final of a major tournament for the first time since 1996. A younger squad, the English have a chance to lock down their first World Cup since 1966 in 2002.

The Dark Horse: Spain (Odds: +798)

Seeking a return to glory from their heyday of 2008-2012, La Roja can never be counted out at the World Cup. After disappointing finishes at the 2014 World Cup (eliminated in the group stage) and 2018 (Spain reached the final 16), Spain is looking for a rebound performance in 2022. The Spaniards have been having some success as of late with a final four appearance at the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, their best finish at a major tournament since 2012. While Spain did lose to the eventual champions, Italy, there is more momentum than they have had as of late.

Prediction: A wide-open field, look for a traditional power to make history in 2022. This is why the stacked roster of Brazil makes sense for a return to the top of the mountain
