This week, the best in women’s golf square off as professional players from Europe and the United States clash in Virginia at the 2024 Solheim Cup. The 2024 competition will be the 19th edition of the event and will be held starting the 13th at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia. Per reports, the previous U.S. competition in 2021 was won by the European squad 15 points to 13 and Team Europe retained the Cup in 2024 after a tie of 14 points to 14. The Americans of course are eager to bring the trophy back stateside and have an excellent squad, led by the likes of Nelly Korda (No. 1 player in the world) and Lilia Vu (the No. 2 player). That said, they will have some strong competition from the European team, headlined by England’s Charley Hull and Germany’s Esther Henseleit.

In this article, SBS will explore what to look for from each Solheim Cup squad along with different potential outcomes at the event and also more notes about golf betting

Team Spotlight: USA

Noted above, the Americans have an excellent team in terms of where they stack up in the Rolex rankings. Korda has been phenomenal on the LPGA Tour with a major championship win this year at the Chevron Championship and also 14 total wins on the Tour. In terms of Solheim Cup-style events, she currently boasts a record of 7-4-1 in 12 total matches. Meanwhile, Vu, who is second in the world rankings, would like to improve on her 1-3 record in these kinds of events. That said, last year, she rose to number one in the Women’s World Golf Rankings and became the LPGA Tour Player of the Year after winning four titles. This includes two majors at the 2023 Chevron Championship and also the 2023 Women’s British Open.

Beyond the dynamic duo, Team USA has some other stars they would like to see perform well and emerge at the 2024 Solheim Cup. This includes Cup rookie Lauren Coughlin who, in 2024, won the Canadian Women’s Open and also the Women’s Scottish Open as well. A veteran player, she has been a professional since 2016 and could be the winning edge if she continues her hot play. The rest of the roster is full of excellent players like Rose Zhang who is a top 10 player in the Rolex rankings and Ally Ewing who is ranked as the 17th best LPGA player as of this article’s writing. Ewing has made three previous appearances at this event and will be relied on heavily to get the Americans going.

Team Spotlight: Europe

As the focal point of the European team, Hull will be tasked with doing battle against Korda and Vu. An excellent player and social media star, she has achieved success both on the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA Tour, winning honors as Rookie of the Year, per sources. Moreover, she also became the youngest competitor to participate in the Solheim Cup. With six professional wins, she has been a pro since 2013. Henseleit is the second-ranked player on the European team and will be making her Solheim Cup debut later this week in Virginia. Ranked as a top-30 player in the Rolex standings, she won the silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In terms of overall competition winners, the United States has won the cup ten times, compared with eight for the Europeans. That said, the Europeans have gotten the better of the Americans in recent years, regardless of location, locking down the Cup in 2019, 2021, and also retaining it in 2023. Other players to look out for on the European team are Celine Boutier (France) and also Maja Stark of Sweden. The former especially could be an excellent player for the Europeans as a top-ten player in the world (nine) who currently boasts a record of 2-1-1.

Team Outcome: Tie

In the history of the Solheim Cup dating back to 1990, there has been only one tie in the competition, that occurred during the 2023 edition of the tournament. While it certainly could happen again, this occurring in back-to-back years would be an unlikely scenario.

Prediction: Though the Europeans have had the hot hand as of late as it pertains to the Solheim Cup, the Americans are certainly eager to regain this great title. Take the American team to be victorious this week on home soil
