One of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour and the national open golf championship for America, the 2022 U.S. Open is upon us. Featuring a field of the world’s best, this should be another classic at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. The winner of the 2021 edition, Jon Rahm, returns along with a slew of other notable names like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. With a prize fund purse of over $12.5 million in years past, this is perhaps the richest tournament in all of professional golf. Scheduled for later this month, this will no doubt be another great showcase of the world’s greatest players.

Below, SBS will go over the top four contenders favored to win the 2022 U.S. Open and who we predict will be the eventual champion.

Favorites to Win The 2022 U.S. OpenBetOnline
Scottie Scheffler+1200
Rory McIlroy+1400
Jon Rahm+1600
Justin Thomas+1600

The No. 1 Contender: Scottie Scheffler (Odds: +1200)

The current No. 1 player in the world according to the Official World Golf Ranking, Scheffler is seeking his second major championship after the Masters earlier this year. In addition to the Masters, Scheffler also won the WM Phoenix Open back at the beginning of the year with a playoff win over Patrick Cantlay. As of late, though, he has some mixed results. Following his master’ triumph, Scheffler missed the cut at the 2022 PGA Championship, which was obviously disappointing for the 25-year-old. However, late last month, he had a strong performance at the Charles Schwab Challenge, where he narrowly lost in a playoff match to Sam Burns. Nonetheless, with four PGA Tour wins on the year, he still is golf’s hottest player.

The No. 2 Player: Rory McIlroy (Odds: +1400)

Winner of the 2011 U.S. Open, McIlroy is looking to make some history later this month if he can notch a victory in Brookline. After scoring a second-place finish at the Masters back in April, McIlroy has shown he is firmly in contention for any major tournament. While he has not won any tournaments this year, the 33-year-old pro did lock down two victories in 2021, including his third Wells Fargo Championship in May of last year. Though he finished in 8th place at the PGA Championship, perhaps this could be his first breakthrough major win since 2014.

Third Ranked Contender: Jon Rahm (Odds: +1600)

The reigning U.S. Open champion, Rahm, will be looking to get back on track at Brookline. So far in major tournaments this year, he has had some disastrous showings, which is unlike him. At the 2022 Masters, the Spaniard finished tied for 27th, while his performance at the PGA Championship was worse at tied for 48th. Nevertheless, Rahm has notched a victory this year at the 2022 Mexico Open, which was a one-stroke win over three other competitors. He would make a lot of history if he could win in Brookline by becoming one of the few back-to-back U.S. Open champions ever.

Final Contender: Justin Thomas (Odds: +1600)

Winner of the 2022 PGA Championship, Thomas is coming off the second major championship of his young career. Following a thrilling playoff win over Will Zalatoris, the 29-year-old scored his second-ever PGA Championship in May. Overcoming a tournament-record seven-shot deficit entering the day, Thomas gritted out a promising victory. While he has never been able to win the U.S. Open in the past, he certainly has momentum on his side and will be looking to notch his best performance ever at the event (he finished in eighth place in 2020).
