She is a neck shy of perfect after six starts on the year, with the only defeat coming against Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Fierceness in the Travers (G1).
She wasn’t fully cranked for the Cotillion (G1) last out, a final prep that was too short for her. Now she stretches back to her best distance, and her running style is perfect for Del Mar. In short, she will take serious being.
The most interesting contender besides the favorite here is Awesome Result. She is untested but consistent, perfect in seven starts in Japan. She has to prove she can handle a ship and handle the step up to graded-stakes company, but a few years ago the Japan-based Marche Lorraine also had class questions, and she upset the Distaff. Awesome Result brings a stronger resume.
Raging Sea has found her best at 1 ⅛ miles, including a three-win streak into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She defeated Idiomatic by a head two starts back, and even though she only beat Distaff long shot Batucada by a head in the Beldame (G2) last out, she did so after a less-than-good start. If she gets away better this time around she will be doing her best work late.
A good local to consider is Sugar Fish. An up-and-coming three-year-old, this Jeff Mullins trainee needed her two-back race, her first against older, but beat older in the Zenyatta (G2) and has an appealing pedigree to try 1 ⅛ miles. Especially since she was able to rally into a slower pace last out, she is appealing despite her running style since the race is unlikely to fall apart.
