Slated for this upcoming week and into next, the 2023 World Men’s Curling Championship features the best countries in the world when it comes to curling. After the 20202 World Championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Sweden kept the good times rolling, winning the world championship in 2021 and 2022. This makes it four in a row for the Swedes from 2018 to 2022. While Sweden has been cruising along when it comes to the national curling scene, they will be contested this week by the likes of Canada, Scotland, and Italy. All of which have finished in the top three in the last two installments of the world championship. Canada was the runner-up to Sweden in 2022 while Scotland finished in second place to the Swedes in 2021 in Calgary.

In this report, SBS will be going over what to expect from each team, a predicted winner in the 2023 World Men’s Curling Championship, and also more notes about curling.

The No. 1 Contender: Canada (+275)

With the 2023 World Men’s Curling Championship taking place in their home country, the Canadians should have some solid home-field advantage this week. Team Canada won the 2017 world title when it was hosted in Edmonton and also in 2011 when the championship was in Regina. That said, they will certainly have a lot of fuel to their fire coming off a second-place finish last year in Las Vegas.

The No. 2 Country: Sweden (+275)

The last two times Canada hosted the world title games were in 2021 (Calgary) and 2019 (Lethbridge) and Sweden won in both of those championships. Aiming for its 12th overall world championship, the Swedes have been dominant since 2013, winning six of the last nine men’s world curling championships. Led by skip Niklas Edin, the Swedish team is a force to be reckoned with and aiming for more history in 2023.

The No. 3 Team: Scotland (+350)

Scotland has not won a world championship since 2009 in Moncton, but that could change given the strong makeup of this year’s squad. The Scots finished in second place in 2021’s world championship tournament, so there is some recent success here and momentum for them to keep things moving. Lead Craig Waddell is one to watch here along with skip Kyle Waddell – the two have been playing together for some time and have great chemistry on the floor.

Final Contending Squad: Italy (+400)

While the other teams on this list have won world titles, Italy is the only squad to have never achieved a first-place finish on the world stage per the favorites here. That said, they had a very impressive bronze medal finish in 2022 in Vegas so perhaps this is a sign of things to come from the Italians. Italian third Amos Mosaner is a standout performer for his team as he won the mixed doubles event at the 2022 Winter Olympics with his partner, Stefania Constantini.

Prediction: For this installment of the World Men’s Curling Championship, expect more of the same as the Swedes have a track record of success and a clear path to the gold once again.
