Slated for late March, the 2025 World Men’s Curling Championship features some of the best teams in the world going at it in Saskatchewan at Mosaic Place. Looking at the 2024 World Championship from last year, Sweden locked down the team title with a dramatic team win over Canada in the finale of the competition thanks to some stellar team play. Meanwhile, the rest of the standings were filled with the usual suspects as it relates to men’s curling on the world stage. The Canadians of course finished second while Italy took home the bronze medal. Just outside the top three, Scotland, a usually strong contender for the world championship, landed in fourth place. With so many great teams, this year should be another great edition.
In this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from the top contending squads at the upcoming Men’s Curling World Championship and also some more notes about the competition.

At last year’s competition, Sweden had some excellent all-around performances from their squad with two members of the team making the tournament All-Star Team. This includes Rasmus Wranå from the second position on the squad along with Christoffer Sundgren in the lead role holding it down for the Swedes. Of course, Sweden saw some excellent top-to-bottom performances last year as evidenced by their fantastic overall mark of 11-1 in Round Robin play. In the playoff bracket, Sweden was able to maneuver around the likes of Italy (5-3), and also the aforementioned Canada, which of course led them to the gold medal. A usually very tough squad, the Swedes have won 12 overall men’s world curling titles to date and have won five of the last six world championship competitions.
Like Sweden, Canada is a fantastic world power on this stage and is usually in the world championship mix. However, they usually have to tangle with Sweden at some point and have fallen short in the past couple of competitions. This includes finishing as the runner-up at five of the last six world championship showcases. Of course, the tide could certainly change this year given they are on their home turf in what should be a great atmosphere for the Canadian squad. With 36 overall world championships, they are easily the most decorated curling outfit not only when it comes to men’s curling, but also in overall gold medals. Noted above, while Canada fell to Sweden in the final championship round, they did have some awesome performances throughout the tournament with a shellacking of Scotland, 9-4 in the semifinal, and an overall team mark of 10-2.
At last year’s tournament, Italy notched an overall mark of 8-4 and was able to win the bronze medal thanks to a variety of spirited performances. This includes a dramatic 7-6 win over Scotland in the bronze medal game that saw the teams go blow for blow, but the Italians pulled away late with four straight points. In terms of players to watch, Mattia Giovanella (92.2% player percentage) and also Amos Mosner (88.1%), are excellent stars that will be critical to the Italians having another competitive tournament. Additionally, heading into the 2024 tournament, Italy was recognized as the number one team prior to the event with 393.4 points in the World Curling Federation order of merit rankings.
Our last contender showcase, Scotland is another strong and consistent squad that could make a great run at the championship if things fall their way. Like Italy, they were ranked fairly high by the order of merit rankings heading into last year’s competition with 367.3 points which was good for second overall. Another veteran crew, Sweden is led by skip Joël Retornaz and the team notched a solid record of 8-4 last year in round-robin play. However, the Italians were unable to keep up with the upper echelon of this list, losing to Scotland and Sweden, but scoring a win against Canada.
In what should be another exciting event, take the Swedes to win here in Moose Jaw. As noted above, Sweden excels on the world stage and has just been so dominant from a world championship perspective that it is hard to bet against such a veteran and powerful team.
