A rematch of Eastern European heavyweights is headlining the next UFC Fight Night card. This time, though, oddsmakers are seeing the outcome going in the opposite direction.
Back in February of 2020, also on a UFC Fight Night card, Polish heavyweight Marcin Tybura was defeating his Moldovan opponent Sergey Spivak. That victory set Tybura off on a five-bout winning streak.
Lately, though, wins are proving harder to come by for Tybura. He’s just 3-2 over his past five bouts. Meanwhile, Spivak has posted impressive wins over Greg Hardy and Derrick Lewis in recent bouts. And he’ll go into this fight as the -160 favorite to avenge his previous loss to Tybura.
UFC Fight Night Odds | The Pick | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
Marcin Tybura vs Sergey Spivak | Spivak | -160 | -155 | -161 |
Damon Jackson vs Chepe Mariscal | Mariscal | -230 | -220 | -222 |
This bout is the co-main event on the Saturday, August 10 UFC Fight Night card slated for the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
In this article, SBS will be going over each fighter, offering a predicted winner in key matchups, and will also be supplying some additional notes and information regarding UFC Fight Night betting.
Fighter Spotlight: Sergey Spivak
The No. 9 UFC heavyweight contender, Spivak (16-4) is a much more mature and prepared fighter for this bout with Tybura than he was when they originally met. Back then, the Moldovan was a newcomer to the promotion.
At 29, he’s nine years Tybura’s junior and that could also be a factor in this outcome. Though he comes into this bout off a September TKO loss to Ciryl Gane, Spivak won his three previous fights by submisison or TKO.
Spivak has recorded the third-most takedowns (27) ever among UFC heavyweights. His 64.3% takedown accuracy percentage is the highest in UFC heavyweight division history.
Fighter Spotlight: Marcin Tybura
With a 12-7 UFC record, the 38-year-old Pole is ranked eighth among UFC heavyweights. However, there are subtle signs that Father Time may be taking a toll on Tybura’s skills.
His win over Tai Tuivasa in his last fight via rear naked choke was the first time since 2021 that Tybura (25-8) won a fight that didn’t go the distance. He’ll want this fight to be a ground and pound contest. Tybura used his grappling skills to beat Spivak in their first meeting.
Prediction: Spivak’s striking ability and submission moves will make the difference in a TKO victory for the Moldovan.
Fighter Spotlight: Damon Jackson
Over his 31-fight UFC career, Jackson (23-6-1) has recorded 65% of his victories via submission. Mariscal, though, has never suffered a submssion defeat during his MMA career.
Jackson, 35, will need to try and control this fight via his wrestling skills. If he tries to go toe-to-toe with Mariscal in a striking battle, it will end badly – and likely quickly – for him.
Fighter Spotlight: Chepe Mariscal
Riding a six-fight win streak, the most common method of victory for Mariscal is emphasized by his nickname – Machine Gun. The featherweight has won 44% of his fights by TKO or KO and an additional 19% via submission.
Mariscal (16-6-0) is 3-0 since making the move to UFC. Three of Jackson’s last four losses have come by first or second-round knockout.
Prediction: Mariscal’s superior striking power will put Jackson on the defensive and end this bout early. Instead of wagering on Marsical’s high moneyline, take him at +200 to win by KO/TKO, or DQ.
