After an amazing 2021 season that saw a ton of action, MLS returns in 2022 for an even bigger encore. Entering the 2022 season as the defending champions (their first-ever championship), New York City FC has a tough road ahead of them if they want to reclaim the championship. At the culmination of the regular season, the New England Revolution won their first Supporters’ Shield (best regular-season record) in franchise history. After coming up short in the playoffs, will the Revolution make a push again?

Below SBS will break down who the top three contenders are to take home the MLS Cup in 2022 and also a dark horse candidate that could make some noise.  Click here for the best MLS betting sites.

The No. 1 Contender: New England Revolution (Odds: TBA)

The participants in the five different MLS Cups (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2014), the Revolution hold the dubious honor of appearing in the most MLS Cups without winning the title. Could that change in 2022? The Revolution have an amazing foundation and are backed by U.S. soccer legend Bruce Arena as their head coach. Last season saw the Revolution win their first ever Supporters’ Shield in club history as well. The squad from New England also set a new MLS record for points in a season at 73 total goals.

The No. 2 Threat: New York City FC (Odds: TBA)

The reigning champions, New York City FC came out of nowhere last season to win the franchise’s first MLS title. After being temporarily out of the playoff picture in mid-October of last season, New York City saw their squad vault into fourth place going into the playoffs. Thanks to the efforts of players like Valentín Castellanos, who finished the season as the MLS Golden Boot winner with 19 goals, the club was able to make a dramatic playoff run. In the 2021 MLS Cup, New York City was able to outlast Portland 4-2 in the shootout period and bring a title to the Big Apple for the first time since 2012.

Third Best Contender from the Field: Portland Timbers (Odds: TBA)

The 2021 season was an interesting year for the Timbers. The club finished fourth in the Western Conference, but then had an amazing run during the post-season to reach the franchise’s third MLS Cup. While the team came up short in the title game to New York City FC, they will return a decent amount of players from last year’s playoff squad. As the fifth-best team in the MLS last season, Portland will be led by Felipe Mora who was the team’s leading goal-scorer last season

The Dark Horse: Columbus Crew (Odds: TBA)

Winners of the 2020 MLS Cup, the Crew are one of the most historically dominant squads in MLS. Led by head coach Caleb Porter, the Crew had an off year in 2021 when they finished in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. However, Porter is known for having successful squads, having won the MLS Cup in 2015 as the head man of the Portland Timbers and later in 2020 leading the Crew. With an almost brand new field (Lower.com Field was completed in 2021), the Crew will be looking to make a big bounce back this season.

Prediction: With the season only weeks away, there is a ton of anticipation on who will bring home the title in 2022. So with that in mind, why not go with the squad that has always played the bridesmaid and never the bride? Keep your eye on the New England Revolution to take home the title in 2022
