For this week’s slate of college football action, the MAC is back with four squads angling for a bowl game and/or finishing the season strong. In the first game of this mid-week slate, the Western Michigan Broncos travel across the state to square off with the Central Michigan Chippewas. Elsewhere in the conference, Miami (OH) is fighting for its postseason life as it has a tough matchup with the Northern Illinois Huskies. In both contests, potential bowl berths will be in play along with bragging rights in the MAC.
For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for in each contest, what each squad brings to the table, and also some other thoughts about NCAA football wagering.
NCAA Football Week Tweleve Games | The Pick | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
Western Michigan at Central Michigan | CMU ML | -400 | -400 | -400 |
Miami (OH) at Northern Illinois | Miami (OH) +1 | -107 | -107 | -107 |
Team Spotlight: Western Michigan
In the lead-up to this contest, the Broncos have had a forgettable campaign in 2022. Having lost four of their last five games, Western Michigan has struggled at times this year to find its footing on offense. With an average of nearly 20 points per game (19.6), the Broncos have not done enough to outlast the competition and are getting outscored by almost a touchdown differential in each game this season. Nonetheless, there still have been right spots this year like running back Sean Tyler leading the team in rushing with 719 rushing yards and five scores. Moreover, wide receiver Corey Crooms could have an outside chance of 1,000 yards this season as he already has amassed 725 during the course of the year.
Team Spotlight: Central Michigan
Opposing their in-state and in-conference rival will be the Chips who are fighting for their postseason lives and would need to win out to become bowl eligible. Led by quarterback Daniel Richardson, Central Michigan has had some solid performances this year thanks to their signal-caller’s 1,988 passing yards and 15 scores (to five interceptions). While the Chips have had some games not go their way, they are currently in the midst of a two-game winning streak following an inspiring win over the Buffalo Bulls. Moreover, Western Michigan has been allowing an average of nearly 222 passing yards per game which could benefit Richard and the Central passing attack.
Prediction: This contest will be a lot closer than people expect given the in-state rivalry but look for the Chips to pull away here and keep their bowl hopes alive.
Team Spotlight: Miami (OH)
Another team that is chasing a postseason berth at 4-6, the RedHawks are certainly a squad that can do some damage when they are on the same page. Miami started this year with some solid wins over Northwestern and Kent State but has fallen behind as of late by losing three of their last four games. Moreover, the RedHawks have been allowing a lot of yards through the air with an average of 252.4 passing yards given up per game. The good news here is that the Huskies allow 20 more total yards on average (368.8 to 388) per game which is helpful for Miami fans. Quarterback Brett Gabbert is one to watch in this contest and will be the difference-maker down the stretch.
Team Spotlight: Northern Illinois
The last team on our spotlight list, the Huskies are technically eliminated from playoff contention but are still playing for pride as Miami enters Huskie Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Running back Harrison Waylee has been a huge bright spot for NIU this year with nearly 1,000 rushing yards (863) and five scores. He will be counted heavily here as the Huskies rushing attack averages nearly 200 yards per game. The rushing battle here will be a good one as Miami has done a good job of shutting down the run by allowing only 116.4 yards per contest. If the Huskies can dominate on the ground, then they will emerge from this game as the victor.
Prediction: This will be perhaps the closest game of the week, but Miami has more to play for than Northern Illinois and should be able to shut down the one-dimensional Huskies.
