The start of the NFL season appeared to be fortuitous for Ohio casinos and other gaming establishments where gaming expansion occurred across the state. Per a recent report, Ohio’s gambling industry experienced significant growth in September, with casinos and lottery systems bringing in impressive. According to the Ohio Control Commission, total casino revenue for the month hit $81.6 million, marking an increase of nearly $3 million compared to the same period last year. Noted in the same article, slot games were the largest contributors, bringing in almost $59 million of the total casino revenue. Meanwhile, table games added just over $22.6 million to the state’s gaming funds. This growth adds to Ohio’s strong year-to-date performance, which has seen total casino revenue surpass $752.3 million. Of that, $548.6 million came from slot games, while table games generated more than $203.6 million.

In this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from the latest gaming news coming from Ohio along with some additional notes and information regarding Ohio gaming updates.

Gambling in Buckeye State seeing more customers

Noted in the same article, Ohio’s gaming industry continues to see steady revenue gains. September’s performance marks another successful month for the state’s regulated casino operations, which are “poised to keep boosting the local economy.” Ohio’s lottery system, the article documents, also reported strong results. The State’s video lottery terminals (VLTs) generated over $1.23 billion in credits from players in September. With more than $1.1 billion in winnings handed out. Additionally, the state’s net win totaled $109.4 million. Distribution of this revenue saw over $72.4 million going to the Racino Commission, $36.6 million to the Ohio Lottery, and the remainder allocated to responsible gaming services and unclaimed credit vouchers.

Additionally, the sports betting industry in Ohio also produced impressive results. Noted in the article, with a total handling of $863 million for September, the state experienced a notable surge of more than $150 million from the previous year. The largest wagers, $842.4 million, were put by online bettors, while $20.6 million were placed at physical venues. Over $105.6 million was made throughout the month by Ohio’s sports betting industry. The gambling industry in Ohio is still thriving and providing a significant amount of funding for state initiatives as other states authorize sports betting.

September did show a small decline month-over-month

While September’s numbers show a decline compared to the previous month, they did remain steady year-over-year per another source. The state’s racinos performed relatively well. Moreover, Ohio’s 11 casinos and racinos brought in approximately $191 million in gambling revenue in September, a $13 million decrease from August’s record-setting number of just over $204 million. The previous record was set in August 2022, at $196 million. In September 2023, these casinos and racinos reported about $190 million in revenue, according to the Ohio Casino Control and Lottery commissions. The four casinos made almost $82 million in gambling revenue in September. This is about a $1 million decrease from September last year.

Casinos and Racinos operate are similar, but separate

Ohio’s seven racinos are gambling venues at horse racetracks offering only slot machines. They do not offer table games with an example of this being at MGM Northfield Park per one article. Additionally, racinos are regulated by the Ohio Lottery Commission. In 2009, Ohio voters approved a constitutional amendment permitting four casinos in the state; an executive order allows Ohio’s seven racetracks to operate video lottery terminals (VLTs). Casinos, on the other hand, have no race track and of course, offer table games. They do share one similarity with racinos (other than slot machines) as they are also regulated by the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

Revenue at Ohio racinos are up overall from last year as these establishments made about $109 million in September. This is an increase from $107 million they made in September last year. Additionally, the Lottery Commission’s totals do not account for bets placed on horse races, or sports betting figures. In the first eight months of 2024, Ohio’s gambling establishments have reported roughly almost $2 billion in revenue, showing no significant change compared to the same period last year.

On a separate note, the article notes the importance of the Ohio gaming tax rate. More specifically, the gross casino revenue tax is a daily levy of 33% on casino operators’ gross revenue. This revenue encompasses all funds exchanged by patrons for chips, tokens, tickets, electronic cards, or similar items, minus the winnings paid out.
