An annual showcase of the best in college baseball, the 2022 NCAA Men’s College World Series (MCWS) is near its crescendo. As of this writing, seven teams are left in the tournament and vying for the 2022 championship. With 2021 winner Mississippi State already eliminated, a new champion will rise to take the throne. The remaining teams are as follows in no particular order: Ole Miss, Stanford, Auburn, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Notre Dame. With the tournament set to conclude later this month, SBS takes a closer look at the top four squads favored to win the championship.
Below, SBS will go into more detail on each squad, how they got to this point and who will be the ultimate victor in the tournament.
Favorites to Win The 2022 NCAA Men's College World Series | |
---|---|
Oklahoma Sooners | +175 |
Ole Miss Rebels | +325 |
Arkansas Razorbacks | +325 |
Notre Dame Fighting Irish | +850 |
After crushing Central Michigan in the regional round, OU advanced to the Super Regionals for a showdown with Virginia Tech. In that series the Sooners were able to outlast the Hokies 2-1, thus propelling them to the College World Series stage. As of this writing, Oklahoma is coming off a triumphant 6-2 victory over Notre Dame, securing them a spot in the finals of bracket one in the tournament. The Sooners duo of Peyton Graham (71 RBI’s) and Tanner Tredaway (.381 batting average) have been marvelous this season for Oklahoma and the key to their future World Series chances.
Ole Miss is coming off a 5-1 upset win over Auburn and are geared up for another SEC showdown with Arkansas. Prior to their entrance in this year’s College World Series stage, the Rebels ran through the Coral Gables regional with impressive wins over Miami and Arizona. After dispatching Arizona in the opening round, the Rebels were then able to squeak past the Hurricanes, 2-1. In a rematch with the Wildcats in the regional finals, Ole Miss blasted Arizona to the tune of a 22-6 victory. The Rebels then went on to sweep Southern Miss (2-0) in the Super Regionals and now find themselves with a great opportunity to do even more damage.
Winners of the Stillwater regional, Arkansas has dominated their competition up to this point. In regional contests against Grand Canyon and Oklahoma State, the Razorbacks won both contests by a combined margin of 15 runs. While they did falter in the regional final against the Cowboys, they were able to rebound in their game three against the Cowboys to secure the regional crown. The Razorbacks then swept North Carolina in the Super Regionals and now find themselves with another showdown with Ole Miss.
The last showcase on our list, Notre Dame has made a habit of getting runs when they need to. In their regional round in Statesboro, the Irish notched two one score wins (both over Texas Tech) and also a two-run victory over Georgia Southern to claim the regional crown. The Irish then were able to knock off Tennessee, two games to one, in the Super Regionals thus vaulting them into the College World Series. Though they have found wins at clutch times throughout the tournament, they are coming off a loss to Oklahoma this past weekend and will need to rebound against Texas A&M.
Prediction: The Sooners have been the most consistent team in this year’s field and are in many ways the team to beat. Take Oklahoma to close things out here.
