In the leadup to this year’s event, Rhodes vs. Cena has been the main storyline and for good reason. Of course, with Cena announcing his intentions to retire from pro wrestling at the end of 2025 at last year’s Money in the Bank, perhaps this will be his final championship run. Conversely, Rhodes has been extremely popular as the champion so maybe this will be another great opportunity to defend his title and cement himself as one of the greatest champions.
At Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVIII, Gunther defeated Jey Uso to retain Raw’s World Heavyweight Championship. Uso would then go on to win the men’s Royal Rumble match at the Royal Rumble the following week, earning a world championship match of his choice at WrestleMania 41. Following weeks of feuding, Uso opened the February 10th episode of Raw where he was attacked by Gunther. The challenger subsequently decided he would challenge the champion Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 41. In this bout, Uso, known more for his role as being part of a fantastic tag team with his brother Jimmy, looks to be getting some love to knock off the imposing Gunther. The champion has been lauded and consistently praised as one of the best wrestlers in the world and of all time by industry journalists and fellow wrestlers alike.
Also at the Royal Rumble earlier this year, SmackDown’s Charlotte Flair won the women’s Royal Rumble match, earning a world championship match of her choice at WrestleMania 41. This was before finally choosing to challenge Tiffany Stratton for SmackDown’s WWE Women’s Championship at WrestleMania.
