Gaming in the Old Line State continues to thrive following another positive report from the area highlighting growth in this space, year over year. Per a recent article, Maryland’s six casinos combined to generate $159,510,910 in revenue from slot machines and table games during September 2024. This was an increase of $4,413,131 (2.8%) compared to September 2023. Casino gaming contributions to the state during September 2023. Contributions to the Education Trust Fund during September 2024 were $49,528,174, an increase of $1,679,744 (3.5%) compared to September 2023. The gaming revenue totals for September 2024 were as follows: MGM National Harbor (2,287 slot machines, 212 table games) recorded a revenue of $66,952,859 in September 2024, an increase of $4,982,879 (8.0%) from September 2023. Meanwhile, Live! Casino and Hotel (3,873 slot machines and 179 table games) scored $59,594,589 in revenue in September 2024, which was good for an increase of $1,183,146 (2.0%) from September 2023. Another casino that saw an increase was Ocean Downs Casino which has 866 slot machines and 19 table games. This venue notched a revenue number of $8,758,104 in September 2024, an increase of $24,564 (0.3%) from September 2023.
Also covered in the article, while establishments soared last month, others fell flat in terms of revenue growth year over year. This includes the Horseshoe Casino (1,344 slot machines and 115 tables) which saw $13,119,567 in September 2024 revenue, which was a decrease of $1,332,169 (-9.2%) from September 2024. Meanwhile, Hollywood Casino (731 slot machines and 23 table games) recorded a revenue total of $6,660,049 in September 2024, a decrease of $62,405 (-0.9%) from September 2023. Finally, the Rocky Gap Casino (629 slot machines and 16 table games) scored a revenue number of $4,424,740 in September 2024, a decrease of $382,885 (-8.0%) from last year. This was the largest decrease across the board seen in the report.
In another report, the Maryland Lottery, casinos, and sports betting contributed $1.585 billion to the state in Fiscal Year 2024, according to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming entity. It is the second-largest single-year contribution to the state, compared to the $1.589 billion that was generated in FY2023. Moreover, casino gaming contributions to the state were for a total of $824 million, Lottery profits were a total of $699.6 million, and sports wagering and daily fantasy sports combined were $61.3 million. That’s an average of $4.3 million per day contributed to state programs and services during FY2024.
“We had an exceptional performance in Fiscal Year 2023, so we came into FY2024 facing a challenging year-over-year comparison,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin. “Nonetheless, we had another strong year on a number of fronts. The Lottery added a new daily game, and the sports wagering market continued to expand. We are proud of our role in generating funds for important state programs.” Additionally, on May 6th this year, the Lottery launched Cash Pop, its first new draw game since the addition of Pick 5 in February 2022, officials said.
Additionally, Maryland’s six casinos generated $1.964 billion in revenue from slot machines and table games, the third-best single-year total. Meanwhile, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced in another report that the state’s six casinos generated $173.9 million in revenue in August from a combination of slot machines and table games. This represents a 7.8% increase in revenue over the same period in 2023. The figure is the ninth-highest earning in a single month recorded in almost fourteen years from when Maryland’s first casino opened in September 2010.
