Las Vegas Feb News

Known for its luxurious neon skyline and high-stakes wagering, Las Vegas is one of the crown jewels in the gambling world. Situated in the Nevada desert, Vegas is known as an oasis for all kinds of gaming from slots to huge sports wagers. Speaking of sports wagers, Vegas and the Silver State as a whole took home a ton of money in Super Bowl wagers. This past weekend, Nevada took in an all-time high of $179.8 million in wagers on the NFL title game according to NBC News.

Below, SBS will detail some of the latest updates in Las Vegas and what it means for gaming in the near future in the state

Recent Developments Regarding Gaming in Vegas

With the Los Angeles Rams knocking off the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20 in the Super Bowl, the Rams were able to take home the Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 2000. In the time period since then, gambling and, sports wagering in particular, have exploded. With Nevada taking in $179.8 million in wagers on the Super Bowl, the state saw a profit of 8.6 percent. This past weekend topped the previous record for bets in Nevada, which was set in 2018 at $158.58 million according to NBC Philadelphia.

According to reports surrounding the results of the bets from this past weekend’s game, the house scored an 8.6 percent profit thanks to wagers on the Rams (-4.5 points). Also, another senior economic analyst source from the Nevada Gaming Control Board said that wagers having the game going over 48.5 points was a big win for the house casinos. Indeed, as the saying goes “the house always wins” and that certainly was true this past weekend, well for the most part.

So what does the future hold for Vegas sports wagering?

With Nevada holding a monopoly on sports gaming for so long in the United States, conventional wisdom would venture to guess that their “luck” would run out at some point. This certainly appeared to be the case in 2018 when the Supreme Court pulled back a federal law that required states to ban gambling on the winners and losers of sporting events. Since then, sports gaming in particular has become legal in over a dozen U.S. states and is easily accessible via smartphone apps.

With that in mind, many would assume that the luster of the Silver State’s gambling ventures would lose steam, but that has not been the case. According to a director of research from the International Gaming Institute at UNLV, the overall mass proliferation of sports gambling has led to growth in the more traditional wagers that Vegas offers. This same researcher suggests that with more awareness around sports wagers, more people realize that sports betting is legal as a whole
