After struggling through some dark days during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Las Vegas gaming economy has roared back. Per a report from the Associated Press and U.S. News last week, gambling in Nevada continued its 14-month hot streak this year with record high revenues and travel to the region. According to these sources, along with the gaming reports from the state and Clark County, casinos statewide reported revenues of $1.13 billion last month, the best April ever for Nevada.

In this breakdown, SBS will go over these findings, what Las Vegas has been doing to bring in these significant numbers and also more information about wagering there.

Nevada casinos have been on a roll since March of 2021

Per this article from U.S. News, Nevada casinos have now reported winning at least $1 billion every month since March of last year.  According to Michael Lawton, senior Gaming Control Board analyst from Nevada, April’s total win amount represents an all-time high for the month. Primarily aided by a very stout event calendar in addition to returning international visitors, the April win total was the highest all-time for Clark County, the Strip and the state as a whole in that calendar month.

The good times have kept rolling into May with Reid International Airport reporting last week that they handled almost 4.26 million arriving and departing passengers over the last month. In relation to pre-pandemic numbers, April 2019’s passenger tally was at 4.28 million travelers. According to the same report, Lawton also noted that the airport saw steady growth with flights to and from international locales from Mexico to the United Kingdom. This also includes international destinations like Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Panama.

Convention and event attendance bolster gaming figures in Vegas

With a ton of action always going down in Las Vegas, things have only been heating up during Sin City’s gaming revenue winning streak. Per the article from AP, the nearly 3.4 million Southern Nevada tourists counted by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority was good for an increase of 31% compared to April of 2021. Moreover, convention attendance was much higher than last year, but still below pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, Vegas also played host to a number of big time events this last month that helped to bump up gaming revenue

According to Lawton, huge special entertainment events like four sold-out evenings at Allegiant Stadium by boy band BTS along with the NFL Draft, played a huge role in these record-breaking figures. Also, Vegas hosted the big National Association of Broadcasters show at the Las Vegas Convention Center which saw some strong crowds. Also thanks to these record-breaking figures, the state collected almost $70 million in taxes based on April casino Winning per the Gaming Control Board. Since Nevada has no personal income tax, this number is especially important to the state since casino taxes make up around 17% of state revenues, which is second only to sales taxes.
