According to a recent poll from the Los Angeles Times, California voters are open to the idea of creating a legal market for wagering on collegiate and professional sports. However, according to the same poll, fewer than half of those surveyed are sure of their support. In a joint effort from the L.A. Times and also UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies, the poll showed that 45% of voters surveyed would support amending the California Constitution to allow sports betting. In the same poll, one-third of voters said they are opposed to this kind of effort while the remaining 22% are undecided.
In some commentary related to the poll, the Los Angeles Times did say that voters were not asked to weigh in on any of the details of how the state would establish legal sports betting. The article pointed out that as many as three ballot measures on the topic could appear on the statewide ballot in November, each envisioning a different way to roll out this business model. What’s more, is that each proposal is backed by various rival groups with their own intentions paving the way for a record advertising spend the year leading up to the legislature.
Per a recent spotlight in ESPN, there are three main sports betting initiatives being considered among the top candidates in California. The California Sports Wagering Regulation and Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act is supported by a coalition of tribes, led by Pechanga, and would restrict sports betting to only in person at tribal casinos. This initiative is currently being opposed by the card rooms in the state.
The second main initiative is called the California Solutions to Homeless and Mental Health Support Act allows online betting with revenue dedicated to combating the homeless crisis in California. This initiative is backed by bookmaking giants DraftKings and FanDuel and also mayors in Sacramento and Oakland. The final act on the ballot for the legislature is the Age-Verified Tribal Online and In-Person Sports Wagering Act which would allow in-person and online sports wagering and other new types of gambling. This initiative is currently backed by another separate coalition of tribes, led by San Manuel.
