Kyrie Irving is no longer considered a lock to rejoin the Brooklyn Nets next season, and the NBA world has been set on fire as a result.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Kyrie and the Nets are at an “impasse’ in negotiations for his next contract, leading many to believe he might head elsewhere. Though he can sign with a different team in free agency, a finite salary-cap landscape means it’s more likely he leaves via trade—if he leaves at all. And in response to this news, the best online NBA betting sites have odds on where Kyrie Irving will play next if he’s not on the Brooklyn Nets. Here are the latest NBA prop betting lines on this matter, courtesy of BetOnline:

This is an interesting choice by oddsmakers. The Los Angeles Lakers are indeed among the teams expected to make a run at Irving, and that in itself means they should be an option. But favorites? That’s a big ask.
The Lakers cannot acquire Kyrie without making a trade. And assuming both Anthony Davis and LeBron James are off the table, they’ll need to put Russell Westbrook’s $47.5 million salary into any deal. That’s not someone the Nets will bite on. The Lakers will instead need third and fourth teams to make the trade work. They’ll also need to put their 2027 and 2029 first-round picks into discussions, as well.
And even then, even if the Lakers find a taker for Westbrook and include every first-round pick they legally can, it’s tough to envision them having the best offer among all potential suitors.
Like the Lakers, the L.A. Clippers will need to acquire Kyrie via a trade. Unlike the Lakers, they have a clearer path to doing so.
Though the Clippers cannot offer a first-round pick until 2029, they have a number of intriguing players on digestible contracts to offer the Nets. A deal built around Terance Mann, Marcus Morris Sr., Reggie Jackson and Norman Powell, for instance, would seriously deepen the Brooklyn’s rotation. The Nets could arguably do that deal even without Jackson in it.
Whether the Clippers are willing to give up that much for Kyrie is a different story. He gives them a third superstar alongside Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, but his availability is forever in question. Given the availability issues of PG and Kawhi, the latter of whom missed the entire 2021-22 season, there’s reason to believe L.A. will approach the situation with caution.
Both the Miami Heat (+400) and New York Knicks (+400) are laying 4-to-1 odds as Kyrie’s next destination. Many will immediately gravitate toward the Knicks, who were hot for Kyrie in 2019 and desperately need an infusion of star power.
Still, the Heat loom as sleepers in this discussion. They can offer as many as four first-round picks and Tyler Herro, in addition to Duncan Robinson or Kyle Lowry as salary ballast. A third or fourth team may need to be recruited for any deal to work, since the Nets have little use for draft picks, but Miami’s asset chest is deep enough to incite interest from the rest of the league.
We’re calling it now: Miami is a more likely landing spot for Kyrie than New York.
It says a lot that oddsmakers don’t have the Nets as a betting option for Kyrie’s next team. That’s because the Nets are, in fact, the most likely landing spot for him. Brooklyn and Kyrie are married out of necessity, and they may stay that way. The Nets don’t have the flexibility to replace him, even via trade, and Kyrie himself cannot threaten to leave in free agency when so few teams have the money to sign him outright.
Still, if he’s going to leave, our guess is he winds up with the Clippers.
Unless word breaks, the Nets will also consider rerouting Kevin Durant, they’re going to want a return for Kyrie that’s built around players who make an immediate impact. The Clippers can meet those criteria more so than any other team projected to be in the running for Kyrie.
To that end, we recommend keeping an eye on the Milwaukee Bucks (+2500), who can make things interesting if they dangle Jrue Holiday or Khris Middleton. The San Antonio Spurs (+3000) are a great dark horse, as well; they’re among the only teams who can actually sign Kyrie outright.
But those are long shots. The Clippers are more realistic, knowing how trade talks are likely playing out.
