Heading into the championship round of the women’s singles bracket of the 2023 French Open, a dominant player faces off with a plucky longshot. For this round, the No. 1 player in the world, Iga Świątek, is aiming for her fourth overall major singles championship and her third overall title at the French Open. Meanwhile, Karolína Muchová, a player that did not draw a top-32 seed at the tournament has found herself in the championship round. The 26-year-old Czech athlete was able to knock off a number of top players to this point, including the likes of Aryna Sabalenka (the second seed) and Maria Sakkari (the eighth seed).

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each athlete, along with a predicted championship winner, and more notes about tennis wagering.

Final Round Matchup Spotlight: Iga Świątek vs. Karolína Muchová

What to look for from: Iga Świątek

The current best player in the world on the women’s side of tennis, Świątek will have her work cut out for her in the championship final, but she is up for the challenge. She has won her last six matchups in straight sets (the fourth round in one set) and has breezed through the tournament for the most part. In the semifinals against Beatriz Maia, she went to a tie-breaking clinching frame but was able to knock off the Brazilian star

Winner of two Grand Slam titles in 2022 (the U.S. and French Opens), Świątek has a career-winning percentage of nearly 80% (79.8). With an aggressive, all-court style of play, the Polish star has an offensive game that few can match. The Grand Slam winner has a ton of variety showcased in her matches and uses dizzying speed to fluster opponents. She has shown an excellent ability as well to slide across the court to overwhelm her foes as well.

What to look for from: Karolína Muchová

Opposing the world’s best player will be the upstart Muchová who has had a phenomenal tournament run to this point. In a surprising turn of events, the Czech professional star is playing in her first-ever Grand Slam final on Saturday. Ranked as low as the No. 487 player in the world as recently as March of this year, the 26-year-old has had an excellent tournament to this point in the best outing of her career. That said, she has knocked off the world No. 1 player before, doing so at the 2021 Australian Open in a great win against home favorite Ashleigh Barty.

In her last match, Muchová bested No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set duel, winning the final portion, 7-5. This matchup however will be her most difficult yet as her opponent is on a torrid hot streak this tournament

Prediction: A classic champion vs. underdog battle, take the favorite here with Świątek winning her fourth overall Grand Slam title
