The 2024 MotoGP World Championship season has been an exciting one thus far, but one racer has emerged at the top followed closely by his main rival. As of this article’s writing and as the circuit heads to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, Francesco Bagnaia is the current points leader with 222. Following six different victories so far this season, the Italian racer has been on fire. That said, Jorge Martin has been nipping at his heels all year with two victories of his own and a top five finish in each race that he has completed. The Spaniard has 212 total points this season. Finally, the other two racers to watch out for this race are Marc Marquez (Spain) and Bagnaia’s Italian countrymate, Enea Bastianini, who are third and fourth in the standings, respectively.
In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from the top four racers in this contest, along with a predicted winner and also more notes about MotoGP wagering.
Favorites to win the 2024 British Motorcylce Grand Prix | |||
---|---|---|---|
Francesco Bagnaia | +260 | +260 | +260 |
Jorge Martin | +400 | +400 | +400 |
Marc Marquez | +450 | +450 | +450 |
Enea Bastianini | +540 | +540 | +540 |
Noted above, Bagnaia has been his usual excellent self this year, but perhaps even more so in terms of winning races. The Italian driver has won his last four outings, including some especially sensational showcases in the Netherlands Grand Prix and his native Italy. With six wins on the season, he of course is leading all racers in total victories this season. In the races he has not won though, he also has been very competitive, with a third place and fifth place finish as well. Though he was unable to finish the race in Portugal earlier this season, he rebounded by winning five of his next seven races, an astonishing feat.
An excellent racer, Martin had to retire during the German Grand Prix, but has had an otherwise fantastic campaign in 2024. Prior to that race, he had accrued four consecutive top-three finishes, including winning the 2024 French Motorcycle Grand Prix. Moreover, while he did have another setback in Spain with a retirement there, he did start the year with three consecutive top-five outings. This includes a victory in Portugal which set him up at the time as the young season’s points leader. Martin is a rising star in the sport and has notched seven wins in his young career along with 22 podium finishes.
Another rider that is usually in the contending mix, Marquez has his work cut out for him trying to pry Bagnaia and his fellow Spaniard Martin away from the top of the podium. With six MotoGP World Championships, Marquez is the overall most decorated racer on this list, but he has to contend with the rising stars of the sport like he once was. This year, the Spanish racer has been his steady self, overcoming a slow start to the season. After finishing in 16th place and being unable to finish another race in his first three outings, he has scored six consecutive top-ten finishes, including four top-three races. With 59 total wins in his career, this could be a great opportunity for him to make history and notch the 60th victory in his storied career.
Bastianini enters this race as the fourth-ranked competitor in the MotoGP World Championship standings. This year, he has yet to score a victory, but has been consistently near the top of the standings in each race he has entered into. In fact, he has yet to retire from a contest this season and has accrued a very impressive eight top-five finishes. This includes four top-three outings, including two back-to-back in two of his last three races. Of course, if he was able to unseat Bagnaia or Martin from the top of the leaderboard more consistently, we would perhaps be talking about him in the pole position of not only this race, but at the top of the standings as well.
Prediction: An excellent showcase of speed and skill, the 2024 British motorcycle Grand Prix should feature another showdown between the top racers on this list. With that in mind, it would be hard to pick against the hottest hand in the sport in Bagnaia, which is why he is the pick here.
