A fantastic honor, the 2024-25 college basketball season will see its best player honored following the season with the 2025 Wooden Award being given out following this year’s campaign. Following a dramatic finish to the 2024 season (where SBS correctly predicted Zach Edey would have a repeat win), this year’s edition features some top-flight competition from the best in the sport. Currently, the odds-on favorite to win the award this year is Duke’s Cooper Flagg. The top-ranked recruit in the 2024 class, the Blue Devils standout is having a fantastic season in Durham. His main competition this year will come from a variety of fantastic programs like Auburn, Marquette, and Villanova. In fact, with much of the season still left to play, this will be a fun and competitive battle through the home stretch to upset Flagg.

In this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these athletes along with a selected winner for the 2025 Wooden Award along with even more information from SBS.

The No. 1 Contender: Cooper Flagg (Duke) (Odds: -550)

Currently slated as the strong favorite to win the Wooden Award this season, Flagg is a fantastic athlete and is in a prime position to take home the honor if he can keep up his superior pace. As of this article’s writing, the towering guard is averaging 19.2 points per game and is a severe mismatch problem for his opponents. Duke is currently 8-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action and is a strong 16-2 on the season. Of course, things could slow down in the rough and tumble ACC, but the Blue Devils seem poised for another run at not only a conference title but a national championship if Flagg can keep up his stellar play. Following a 28-point explosion against Boston College, Duke and Flagg are humming along.

No. 2 Contender: Johni Broome (Auburn) (Odds: +500)

Another mismatch nightmare for opponents, Broome is a double-double machine and is also a talented playmaker as demonstrated by his 3.3 assists per contest. With an average of 17.9 ppg and 10.7 rebounds each game, Broome is a stalwart for top-five Auburn. A senior out of Plant City, Florida, the forward has wreaked havoc on opponents this season and has the Tigers off to a phenomenal 5-0 start in SEC play, which is also buoyed by their remarkable 17-1 record. Of course, it remains to be seen if Auburn can keep up this torrid pace, especially given the nature of how talented and deep the SEC is. Regardless, he has established himself as the main contender for Flagg’s potential title.

The No. 3 Athlete: Kam Jones (Marquette) (Odds: +800)

Moving down the line, Jones has the Golden Eagles flying along this season with his superior 19.1 ppg mark leading the way. A playmaking guard, he also has solid marks in rebounds (4.9 rpg), assists (6.7 apg), and field goal percentage (49.1%) which is stellar for a guard. Another senior player, Jones has helped Marquette to a great record this season at 15-3 overall along with a 6-1 mark to start Big East Conference action. With UConn still lurking though, the Golden Eagles will need some big playmaking down the stretch from their star guard. Indeed, the senior from Memphis is the key factor for Marquette not only securing a Big East crown, but also making a run in March.

The Final Contender: Eric Dixon (Villanova) (Odds: +1800)

Closing out the SBS Wooden Award countdown, Dixon is a senior forward who currently leads the country in scoring at 24.7 ppg. With a fantastic knack for finding the basket, the senior forward has been critical to Villanova scratching their way through Big East action. With an overall mark of 5-3 in conference play, Dixon is a dark horse to notch the Wooden Award thanks to his scoring prowess.

Prediction: Cooper Flagg

While there are a ton of talented options on this list, Flagg has been dominant this season and is one of the most gifted players in the sport. He will win the Wooden Award and then be a lottery selection in the upcoming NBA Draft.
