Known for being one of the premier non-major tennis events, the 2024 Cincinnati Open kicks off this week with a loaded field as it relates to men’s singles. For this tournament, Novak Djokovic was the defending champion but withdrew before the tournament began. With that in mind, the top athletes in this event also have the best seeds with Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev registering in at seeds one through four. Sinner is currently ranked as the World No. 1 player in men’s professional tennis and is the reigning Australian Open champion. Meanwhile, Alcaraz is another former number-one ranked competitor and is vying for the top spot against his rivals. Zverev is the 2020 Tokyo Olympics tennis gold medalist and Medvedev can also claim the former number one ranking to his long list of accomplishments.

In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these top tennis pros and also some more notes and info regarding tennis wagering and beyond.

The No. 1 Contender: Jannik Sinner (Odds: +150)

Noted above, the Italian player enters this tournament with a great chance to win as he has been on fire this year. The highest-ranked Italian singles player in history, Sinner has won 14 singles titles on the ATP Tour and also two Masters 1000 titles. While he has been fantastic in 2024, he has not always performed well at the Cincinnati Open. His best performance came in 2022 when he advanced to the third round, but there is no doubt that he has his sights set on a much-improved performance at this year’s edition. With a win-loss record of 18-3 in Masters 1000 events in 2024, Sinner has been an imposing figure on the court and should have a strong run in Cincinnati if he is on his game and healthy.

The No. 2 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +220)

Another notable figure, Alcaraz’s resume has been covered extensively in this space before as perhaps the new face of tennis once this current great generation retires. Last year, he made the final round of the Cincinnati Open, losing to Djokovic in another classic clash between the two amazing competitors. Of course, with the Joker out this time, perhaps the Spaniard has a much more clear path to victory if he can also topple his high-performing rivals in the process. He has a 12-2 record in ATP Masters 1000 events this year but has been hampered by injuries as of late. So, if he is healthy, he may be the man to beat in Ohio this week as he aims for his 21st career title.

Third Ranked Athlete: Alexander Zverev (Odds: +400)

Currently ranked as the world number four player, he has been ranked as high as the second-best athlete in the world by the ATP. As noted above, he is an Olympic gold medalist and has won 22 ATP Tour titles in singles and two in doubles, along with being the runner-up at two majors. This includes the 2020 U.S. Open and also the 2024 French Open. He has been a strong competitor this year, with a record of 14-3 at Grand Slam tournaments in addition to a mark of 16-4 at ATP Tour Masters 1000 events. He is coming off a win at the Italian Open and has performed well at this event in the past, winning the 2021 edition of the Cincinnati Open. Also, he made the semifinals of this tournament last year as well.

Final contender spotlight: Daniil Medvedev (Odds: +400)

Another competitor that has been ranked as high as the best in the world, Medvedev has won 20 ATP Tour singles titles, including the 2021 U.S. Open. In 2024, he has also been successful, notching a record of 14-3 in Grand Slam events, along with a mark of 15-6 in ATP Tour 1000 tournaments. In the past, he has won the Cincinnati Open, last doing so in 2019 and making it to the semifinals in 2021 and 2022. Morevover he has one of the strongest records of any competitor at this event, with a mark of 15-6. Moreover, he is perhaps due for a title this year, having won five last year and none so far this year.
