Heading into this year’s Wimbledon tournament, Novak Djokovic is aiming for history in more ways than one. Winning each time the championship has been held (except in 2020, due to Covid-19), the Joker is on the precipice of equaling Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon men’s singles titles. Meanwhile, Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev are all battling it out for the men’s singles No. 1 ranking as the best in the world. In addition to those three competitors, another athlete, Jannik Sinner has been on a hot streak as of late and is looking to best his quarterfinal appearance in Wimbledon last year and advance to his first Grand Slam semi-final.

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of the competitors listed above, a predicted winner, and also some more notes about tennis wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Novak Djokovic (Odds: -160)

Currently ranked as the world No. 2 player in the world, but perhaps not for long, Djokovic is of course the most decorated player when it comes to Grand Slam titles. He has won an all-time record 23 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, including seven Wimbledon championships, second all-time. This year alone, he has already notched impressive victories at the Australian and French Opens. In terms of sure bets, Djokovic, until he regresses significantly, is a strong favorite at each Grand Slam tournament.

The No. 2 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +375)

Recognized as the current No.1 player in the world, Alcaraz reached the fourth round of Wimbledon last year but is primed for a strong run here if he is healthy. The winner of the 2022 U.S. Open, he has emerged as Djokovic’s prime rival with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer fading off into the sunset. Earning acclaim for his athleticism and physical prowess, the phenom will need a complete performance to advance and get over the Wimbledon hurdle.

Third Ranked Athlete: Jannik Sinner (Odds: +2000)

As referenced above, Sinner has been on the rise since rocketing into the top 50 back in 2020. The 21-year-old is aiming for his first Grand Slam semi-final appearance but has steadily improved at each tournament he has entered. Known for his calm on-court demeanor and all-court movement, he has established a 29-8 record thus far in 2023 and is primed for more wins. With seven career ATP titles, he has his whole career in front of him to make some noise.

Final contender spotlight: Daniil Medvedev (Odds: +2500)

The number three player in the world, Medvedev is a former world No. 1 athlete, holding the ranking for a total of 16 weeks. Over the course of the past couple of years, he has won 20 ATP Tour singles titles, including the 2021 U.S. Open and the 2020 ATP Finals. The Russian star was the first man outside of the “Big Three” since Andy Murray in November 2016 to be recognized as the best in the world.

Prediction: This is going to be another hard-fought showdown, but if Alcaraz is one hundred percent for this tournament, he has a great shot to knock off Joker
