A stellar event, the 2025 Indian Wells Open (the BNP Paribas Open for sponsorship reasons) kicks off this month and features the best in the world going at it in California. Heading into this event, outlets have identified a handful of athletes that could make a run to the title, including some very familiar names. Entering this event, Carlos Alcaraz has been tabbed as the man to beat, but will face some stout competition throughout the tournament. This includes the likes of Alexander Zverev who has been leading many of the ATP points rankings and could enter this event as the number one overall seed. Additionally, with the number one player Jannik Sinner withdrawing due to a doping violation, the competition could see a surprise champion in the mix.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from the top players entering the 2025 Indian Wells Open, and also pick a predicted winner for this spectacular Southern California event.

The No. 1 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +275)

A teen phenom, Alcaraz began his professional playing career at a very young age and has not looked back. Winner of four different Grand Slam titles, including two in 2024 (French Open and Wimbledon), the Spaniard is a sensational star and one of the most consistent players on the tour. This year, he has already advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, but of course would like a win at Indian Wells. In the past, he has won back-to-back events here and is the current reigning champion at the Indian Wells Open. Last year during ATP Masters 1000 events, he accrued a record of 16-5, but only won one event (Indian Wells) even though he made the quarterfinals of three different competitions.

The No. 2 Contender: Daniil Medvedev (Odds: +300)

Ranked as the world No. 1 player in all of singles tennis by the ATP, Medvedev is a fantastic player and a dark horse pick to win at Indian Wells. In the past, he has won 20 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including the 2021 US Open and also the 2020 ATP Finals. After attaining the number one ranking in 2022, he then struggled with form and eventually dropped out of the top 10 in rankings. However, he rebounded in early 2023 and has since reached two more major finals in a return to the top echelon of the sport. He is aiming for his first-ever Indian Wells Open win after reaching the final round of the past two tournaments. He has a 16-7 overall record at this event.

Third Ranked Athlete: Alexander Zverev (Odds: +550)

Currently rated as the No. 2 player in the world, the German star is an excellent force on the pro tennis circuit. In the past, Zverev has won 23 ATP Tour titles in singles and two in doubles, and has been the runner-up at three different majors. Additionally, his career highlights include a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and titles at the 2018 and the 2021 ATP Finals. Earlier this year, he made the final round of the Australian Open and had a sensational run through that event. During 2024 competition, he scored two wins at ATP 1000 events, including winning the Paris Masters and also the Italian Open. In regards to Indian Wells, he would like to improve on his outing from last year where he advanced to the quarterfinals.

Final contender spotlight: Stefanos Tsitsipas (Odds: +1100)

Another fantastic star, Tsitsipas has been ranked as high as the world number three in men’s singles tennis by the ATP and has been around the top tier of the sport for some time. In the past, the Greek star has won 12 ATP Tour singles titles, including the 2019 ATP Finals and three Masters 1000 events. Relating to Indian Wells, Tsitsipas made the quarterfinals of the event back in 2021 and has an overall record of 7-6, which he would surely like to make sure he improves on this year. Perhaps this is the event he breaks through.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz

Alcaraz is going to face an uphill battle here, but he is the Indian Wells hot hand and should have an excellent shot to three-peat if he is in peak form.
