Certainly a spectacular event, the 2025 Australian Open kicks off this week as the best in the world collide at Melbourne Park for what should be a great tennis showcase. For this event, there are some interesting storylines to follow. For example, Novak Djokovic (+700) is vying for a record-breaking eleventh Australian Open title and a record-extending 25th major title. Additionally, Carlos Alcaraz (+350) is aiming to become the youngest man ever to complete the Career Grand Slam in singles titles. That said, they both will have to knock off potentially at some point, the No. 1 overall seed in Jannik Sinner who had an amazing 2024 season on the pro tennis circuit. Last year, Sinner won the Australian Open and also the U.S. Open for his first two Grand Slam championships. Finally, a dark horse contender here is Alexander Zverev who could make a surprise run here.

In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from the top contenders at the 2025 Australian Open along with a predicted winner and some additional notes about tennis wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Jannik Sinner (Odds: +140)

Currently ranked as the world’s No. 1 player in men’s singles by the ATP, Sinner had a spectacular 2024 and is also the first Italian player to achieve this overall ranking. He has won 18 singles titles on the ATP Tour, including two majors which of course were noted above. Additionally, he also led Italy to the 2023 and 2024 Davis Cup crowns. Going back to last year’s Australian Open, Sinner defeated former world No. 1 Djokovic and then Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling five-set final round. More specifically, he came back from two sets down to win his first major title. He then followed that performance by winning the US Open and also the ATP Finals to finish the year as the number one player in men’s professional tennis.

The No. 2 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +350)

Another excellent tennis star, Alcaraz has been ranked as high as the World No. 1 in singles play by the ATP as well. In his career, he has won 16 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including four major titles and five Masters 1000 championships. While he of course has had an excellent track record of success in the past, the Australian Open has been a tricky event for the star player, only notching a record of 7-3 at the different tournaments and with a personal best of the quarterfinals last year. That said, he still won two Grand Slam titles last year season (Wimbledon and the French Open) and is still one of the most dominant stars in modern tennis. If he is on his game in Australia, he will be hard to take down.

Third Ranked Athlete: Novak Djokovic (Odds: +700)

Perhaps the greatest player ever in the history of tennis, few, if any, can match the career accolades and honors of “The Joker”. Noted above and in various forums, he has won a record 24 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, including a record ten Australian Open titles. Additionally, Djokovic is the only man in tennis history to be the reigning champion of all four majors at once across three different surfaces. Also, in singles, he is the only man to achieve a triple Career Grand Slam. Last year, while he was unable to score a major championship, he still had a productive campaign. At the Australian Open, he has an amazing overall mark of 94-9 with this event being his best overall event of any Grand Slam singles event.

Final contender spotlight: Alexander Zverev (Odds: +900)

Our last spotlight showcase, Zverev has won 23 ATP Tour titles in singles and two in doubles during the course of his stellar career. Additionally, he has been runner-up at two Grand Slam events, including the 2020 U.S. Open and the 2024 French Open. In 2024, he performed well at a variety of Grand Slam events, including a runner-up finish at the 2024 French Open along with a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open. A very talented player, he will just need things to break his way in order to make a run to the championship match.
