With reigning champion Rafael Nadal having to withdraw due to injury, the French Open will crown a new champion in the 2023 edition of the famed tournament. Leading the way for this tournament will be No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz who is also recognized as the world No. 2 player by the ATP. In addition to the Spanish player, another excellent contender at this year’s Open is two-time French Open winner, Novak Djokovic. In fact, Joker is coming off a win at the 2023 Australian Open and just knocked off Alcaraz as the World No. 1 player. Two other fantastic athletes positioned for greatness at this year’s French Open are Holger Rune (No. 7 in the world) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (a former top three player in the world).

In this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of the contending athletes, a predicted winner for the tournament, and more notes about tennis wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +140)

The Spansh phenom unfortunately was unable to play in the Australian Open earlier this year due to injury, but should be ready to roll at the French Open. In 2023 alone, Alcaraz has won the Inidan Wells Masters along with the Madrid, Argentina and Barcelona Opens, giving him an overall record on the year of 17-2. In fact, he has won three tournaments this year on clay surfaces. The 2022 U.S. Open champion, Alcaraz has never advanced past the quarterfinals of the French Open.

The No. 2 Contender: Novak Djokovic (Odds: +200)

One of the most decorated players of all time, Joker just won his 22nd Grand Slam title after claiming the championship at the Australian Open in January. Currently ranked again as the No. 1 player in the world, Djokovic is searching for his second win this season after claiming the title in Melbourne. While he of course has had success across all major venues, the French Open is perhaps Joker’s weak point (if you can say that) when it comes to Grand Slam Tournaments. Though he is a two-time champion, his winning percentage there (84 percent) is the lowest of any of his major tournament outputs. That being said, he is still a threat to win any tournament he plays in by a large margin.

Third Ranked Athlete: Holger Rune (Odds: +700)

Rune was able to accrue his fourth singles title earlier this year by notching a victory at the 2023 Bavarian Open which was his second time winning the event. Moving into the top ten in the world rankings, the Danish player has been on a steady ascent up the ranks, even defeating Djokovic earlier this year at the Rome Masters. In addition too Joker, Rune was also able to knock off Casper Ruud as well in this tournament, another player who has been among the best in the world at times.

Final contender spotlight: Stefanos Tsitsipas (Odds: +800)

The shining star from Greece, Tsitispas made the finals of the Australian Open earlier this year and also the semifinals of the Italian Open as well. While he has performed well overall, he has yet to secure a title this season, with his last win coming at the Mallorca Championships last June in Spain. The Greek star is an awesome player when he gets going and has tangled with Djokovic and Alcaraz in the finals of multiple tournaments as well. While he fell earlier this year to both, at the Australian Open (Djokovic) and Barcelona (Alcaraz), he has made 26 career finals to date and could do so again in Paris.

Prediction: This will be another two-horse race between Alcaraz and Djokovic, but the younger superstar (Alcaraz) will take over his legendary counterpart once again
