A bout billed as “The King is coming home,” Mexico’s prodigal son, Canelo Álvarez returns to his native country in a stellar super middleweight battle against England’s John Ryder. Álvarez is coming off his epic trilogy fight against Gennady Golovkin, which he won in unanimous fashion after a 12-round battle. Meanwhile, Ryder’s last fight was against Zach Parker which he was also victorious in, notching a fifth-round corner retirement victory, thus giving him the interim WBO super middleweight title. The latter enters this fight as somewhat of an underdog to Álvarez but Ryder’s 32-5 record is a fantastic mark that the champion does need to take seriously.
For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each fighter, a predicted winner, along with more notes and information about boxing wagering.
As stated above, the 32-year-old boxing superstar is coming off an epic trilogy win over “Triple G” at the T-Mobile Arena in September of last year. Prior to that though, he came up short in a bout for Dmitry Bivol’s WBA (Super) light heavyweight title. With Álvarez moving around weight classes to challenge Bivol, he was unable to bounce the champion for his crown and lost in unanimous fashion, bringing him his second career loss. That said, the Mexican boxing superstar’s record now stands at an astonishing 57-2-2, one of the best marks still in the sport.
Recognized as the world’s best active super middleweight boxer by multiple outlets, the champion Álvarez is also one of the sport’s biggest draws. With his bouts regularly breaking PPV records, the 32-year-old is no stranger to the spotlight and will be even more at home in Guadalajara. Known as being an excellent counterpuncher, this fight is positioned to be another bout that will be in favor of the champion.
On the other side of the ring will be Ryder who, while an underdog, presents a strong challenge for Álvarez. Coming off a string of four consecutive victories in venues from Florida to London, the English fighter is hungry to defend his WBO title in the biggest fight of his life. In his last four wins, Ryder has via TKO or RTD twice while also garnering one unanimous decision win (Mike Guy) and a split decision victory over Daniel Jacobs in London. A fighter with some solid knockout power, Ryder has 18 KO victories in his career and has not lost a fight since November of 2019.
With all of this in mind, he has never faced a fighter close to the caliber of Álvarez especially on his home country soil. This bout will be an uphill battle for Ryder, but he will be well-rested given his last fight was in November of last year and also charged up given the higher stakes. Could Ryder be able to score an upset here? Perhaps, and the boxing world is due for a big upset as well.
Prediction: This fight will be a spectacle as Álvarez makes his return home for his first fight in Mexico since 2011. That said, take the homecoming king to win against Ryder.
