In last year’s edition of the World Championships, Scotland put together a fantastic mark of 10-2 during round-robin action in the tournament. Skip Bruce Mouat helped guide the team to being tied for second place, but they lost the tiebreaker due to a head-to-head matchup. The Scots would face Canada in the semifinals but would come up short, 9-4, in the matchup. In the bronze medal game, Scotland lost another thrilling matchup, dropping the contest to Italy, 7-6. Nonetheless, it would appear that oddsmakers once again favor the Scots to make a run as they are bringing back a strong and familiar cast of characters for this tournament. Additionally, Mouat was one of four players in the event to score a perfect game with only 12 shots in Scotland’s match against New Zealand.
Canada was the runner-up at last year’s event and had an amazing showdown with Sweden in the Championship Game that saw the Canadians come up just short. Regardless, last year’s championship saw a ton of great performances from the Canadian squad. This includes third Mark Nichols leading the tournament in player percentage for his group at 91%. Additionally, skip Brad Gushue had a fantastic competition as well, notching an 88.4% player percentage to lead all skips, including Mouat and Sweden’s Niklas Edin. While Canada came up short in last year’s contest, they are now on home soil and could again be the team to beat with the home crowd with them.
During last year’s World Championship, Sweden had an excellent competition notching the gold medal by beating all comers. Lead Christoffer Sundgren scored a perfect game against Scotland and the rest of the Swedish squad were in the zone throughout the tournament. In addition to Sundgren’s performance, second Rasmus Wrana was also recognized to the tournament All-Star team with his teammate. During the round-robin portion of play, Sweden notched a mark of 11-1 in the competition and only fell to the Scots during that portion of the tournament. Of course, they ended up finishing higher than their Scottish foes by winning the gold medal for the event.
The final team spotlight for this competition, Switzerland enters this event with another stacked crew. They are led by skip Yannick Schwaller who had a perfect game against the Netherlands in the World Championship last year. In the final standings of the tournament, the Swiss fell short of expectations, notching a disappointing seventh-place finish. During the round-robin portion of the event, Switzerland posted a middle-of-the-road mark of 6-6 which was not what they were looking for to enter the tournament. However, this could definitely be a great tournament for them to bounce back in and shock the host Canadians.
Scotland appears to be the darling favorite for oddsmakers for this competition and for good reason, as they have a great roster of talent. However, Canada will have the wind at their backs for this tournament thanks to the home crowd and should have an excellent shot of bringing the World Championship home to the Canadian faithful.
