Breeders’ Cup Turf Handicapping

Now that you know where you can place your bets on the Breeders’ Cup Turf, it is time to get to know the horses in the field.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Favorites

Defending champion #13 Tarnawa comes into the race in the sharp form again. Though she has been narrowly defeated in her last two, both of those races were proper Group 1 affairs, including the best mile and a half turf race in the world, the Arc de Triomphe (G1).

Tarnawa is a closer. On the day of the draw that style looked a liability, with #5 Tribhuvan and #6 Acclimate looking the only real speed. But, with United and Domestic Spending scratching, #15 Bolshoi Ballet and #16 Channel Maker both get in, and they both have early speed as well. This strengthens Tarnawa’s chance to repeat.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Value Horses

#7 Walton Street has a great winning chance at a square price. He comes in off of a decisive score in the Canadian International (G1). Though these foes are tougher, he has been holding his own against top horses overseas before that tilt at Woodbine, including a fourth in the Sheema Classic (G1), and then a race two back where he was just a length behind Arc winner Torquator Tasso.

With tactical speed, Walton Street should be able to sit off the speed in the race and be able to get the jump on the real closers. He should love the firm turf, and it is also a point in his favor that trainer Charlie Appleby is so good with overseas shippers in big races. He spots them immaculately.

#12 Teona also has legitimate claims. She was well beaten over soft going in the Oaks (G1) three back, but has improved significantly in her last two races, both over the better ground. She most recently won the Prix Vermeille (G1) against older, and should maintain her strong form over this firmer ground at Del Mar.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Exotics Horses

#11 Gufo and #9 Sisfahan both benefit from the addition of the new speed from the also-eligible list. Gufo has tables to turn on Rockemperor, but got a much better draw this time and is a serious contender if he runs back to his Sword Dancer. German Derby winner Sisfahan ran a good second to Torquator Tasso two back and should be rolling late at a price.
