In the Silver State, a star-studded storm is brewing when Canelo Álvarez takes on Gennady Golovkin (Triple G) in perhaps the final showdown between the two stellar middleweights. Scheduled for later this month at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the two star fighters will be vying for the undisputed middleweight championship. Scheduled as a 12-round matchup, this will be perhaps the final chapter between the two competitors. After a draw in their first encounter in 2017 and a win for Álvarez in the rematch in 2018, the third match will be the tipping point for the two champions.
In this report, SBS will break down what to look for from each competitor, who will win on September 17th and also some other thoughts about wagering on boxing.
One of the most recognizable athletes in the world, Álvarez is certainly a fighter that is one of the most special in the sport. Known as an amazing counterpuncher, he has been able to take advantage of his opponents time and again by exploiting openings in their defense while also avoiding direct punches to his frame. Also known as being a dominant body puncher, the Mexican boxer is a dynamic threat any time he steps in the ring. With a record of 57-2-2, the 32-year old champion is as good as they come in the sport and is recognized as the world’s best active boxer, pound-for-pound, by some publications.
The first and only boxer in history to be recognized as the undisputed champion in the super middleweight class, the 32-year old competitor is a machine. In his last showdown with Golovkin, Álvarez was able to win the contest with a majority decision after pulling away late in the battle. Since then, he won seven matches in a row, before falling to Dmitry Bivol in May of this year. The last time Álvarez lost a boxing match was to the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013. He has never had a losing streak in his professional boxing career and is not looking to start now.
On the opposite side of the ring from Álvarez will be Golovkin who has been a strong foil to the undisputed champion. A tremendously talented competitor in his own right, “Triple G” is a multiple time middleweight world champion and a two-time unified champion. While he has slowed down some in his later career, he is definitely not a competitor to overlook at the age of 40 years old. As of last month, he is ranked as the world’s eighth best active boxer, pound for pound, by a handful of publications. In fact, he is recognized by ESPN as the second best active middleweight in the world.
Sporting a professional boxing record of 42 wins and one loss (to Álvarez), Triple G has certainly all of his accolades as one of the greatest middleweights of his generation. Since his only career loss back in September 2018, he has rebounded with four straight victories, his last coming in April of this year at the Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. With all of the major super middleweight titles on the line, this could be the crowning achievement of Triple G’s career if he can pull off the upset over Álvarez.
Prediction: This should be an excellent showcase of boxing action, but look for the younger Álvarez to pull away in this contest and outlast Triple G once again.
