Sunday’s race will cover 400 laps and 210 miles over the Martinsville Speedway short track circuit. Stages are 80, 100 and 220 laps.
The seventh race of the season, the .526-mile oval in Martinsville, Virginia presents an unusual challenge to the NASCAR Cup Series drivers. It’s a unique racing surface with asphalt on the straightaways and concrete in the turns. There’s only 12 degrees of banking in the turns and zero degrees of banking on the straightaways.
Let’s look at the top contenders for the Cook Out 400 title.
Last year, Blaney finished fifth in the Cook Out 400. The driver of the No. 12 Ford for Team Penske has run in the top 10 six times here and finished among the top five in five spring Martinsville races.
However, Blaney has never won this race. His best finish was second in 2020.
Larson is coming in hot. He was the winner in last week’s stop on the circuit, the Straight Talk Wireless 400. That was the first victory of the season for the driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.
Larson also has a pair of third-place finishes this season. He’s presently stationed second overall in the NASCAR Cup Series drivers’ standings. He won this race in 2023.
Winner of his second straight Daytona 500 last month, Byron is setting the pace as the current NASCAR Cup Series points leader. The driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports was a top-10 finisher in three of the past four races.
Byron has won the Cook Out 400 in 2022 and 2024.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver has done everything in this race but win. Elliott has finished in the top 10 in eight straight Martinsville spring races.
There were second-place runs in 2019 and 2021. Elliott was third last year and in 2017.
The veteran driver of the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing has proven to be a dominant performer at Martinsville over the years. Hamlin has won the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville no less than three times.
Unfortunately, Hamlin’s most recent win in this race was a decade ago in 2015. He was also the race winner in 2008 and 2010.
The perenially consistent Bell has already posted three race wins this season. That leads all NASCAR Cup Series drivers.
However, Bell comes to Martinsville off an uncharacteriscally poor performance. He finished 29th in the Straight Talk Wireless 400.
Logano finished second in this race in two of the past three years. The Team Penske driver has run in the top 10 here five years in a row, seven of the last eight years and in nine of the past 11 races.
The Stewart-Haas Racing driver has hit the top 10 here in three successive races. Briscoe’s best finish in the Cook Out 400 was a fifth-place showing in 2023.
Alex Bowman (+2500) has finished in the top 10 in five of the six races this season. He comes to Martinsville off a second-place finish in last week’s Straight Talk Wireless 400.
Brad Keselowski (+2200) won the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville in 2019. Kyle Busch (+3300) was the 2016 Cook Out 400 winner.
Blaney has proven to be a consistent performer at Martinsville. He’s not found a way to drive down Victory Lane, however.
Not only did Larson win here in 2023, he won the first stage and ran second overall in last year’s race. Go with Larson to win the Cook Out 400 in the NASCAR picks.
