March Madness is among the biggest betting events held each year and BetNow recently shared a report on some common March Madness betting myths. Per the article, millions of individuals take part each year by filling out brackets and betting, trying to take home the big money. With all the excitement also came a number of betting myths, though, and every seasoned bettor believed in these myths at some point. For example, the author of the article used to believe that a wager on the higher seed was a lock, and with enough research, a perfect bracket was attainable. However, the report illustrates that the reality is that the majority of these myths are detrimental to a betting strategy and will have consumers making errors, at least according to BetNow. This is why this article was created to help debunk the March Madness 2025 betting myths.

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from the latest gaming news coming from BetNow along with some additional notes and info from the website and beyond.

Picking a higher seed is not always the right choice

Noted in the article, the most prevalent myth is that the higher-seeded team always wins. It does sound good on the surface, higher seeds are better, so they must be stronger, right? The reality is the article notes, upsets occur annually, and lower seeds regularly record upset victories. Indeed in nearly every tournament, you will witness a No. 12 seed defeating a five seed in the first round. Placing wagers on only the higher seeds is one way of surrendering possible value bets

Another myth covered in the report is that you can achieve a perfect bracket if you conduct enough research. Millions attempt to complete a perfect bracket each year, hoping that the right research will allow them to correctly select every winner. The reality is that the chances of a perfect bracket are one in 9.2 quintillion which means it’s basically impossible. Even so-called experts get numerous games incorrect since March Madness is completely unpredictable. This is due to injuries, poor shooting nights, and crazy upsets that destroy even the most “prophetic predictions.”

The report gives the reader some different tactics to get around this misconception. This includes concentrating on intelligent betting, not perfection, like trying not to pick every winner, but rather seeking out good value bets. Additionally, you can utilize betting strategies like bankroll management and spreading bets around rather than nailing every game. Additionally, the report says you “do not need to strive for perfection” as even professional analysts are wrong sometimes, so do not get frustrated when you are as well.

Betting the favorite to cover is not a foolproof method

Most assume the favorite will cover the point spread so if a team is a -7 favorite, they would need to win by seven more points. The reality is though, the article points out, favorites don’t always cover as underdogs during the tournament have a tendency to make games closer than they should be or win outright. Additionally, sportsbooks put out lines to split action, not precise forecasts. Like the other myths, BetNow shared some different tactics on what you can do to overcome this myth. For example, you should consider teams’ performances against the spread (ATS) where a few favorites win but fail to cover. Others cover while losing as underdogs.

In this case, you will have matchups to consider like if a slow, defensive-minded basketball team can keep the game close even in a loss. Additionally, wagering on an underdog to cover is a strong strategy if a solid underdog is receiving +10 points, they do not have to win – only keep it close

Wagering more after a loss is not a good idea to win back

Per the report, this is called chasing losses and many have been guilty of it. Once you lose, you are inclined to place a bigger bet on the next match in the hope of recovering it. The reality of this situation is that this is a risky strategy as betting emotionally results in poor decisions and even larger losses. Just because you lost this bet, does not necessarily mean you will win the next one

Some ways you can overcome this myth is by adhering to a bankroll strategy and your own personal threshold. In this case, this means placing the same-sized bets regardless of whether you are winning or losing. Additionally, the report notes to don’t bet to “get even” but rather bet only when you have good value, not due to frustration. Finally, take a break when necessary and if you are experiencing a losing streak, take a break and re-evaluate your strategy
