Kicking off this week, the 2024 US Open in the women’s singles division features a ton of fantastic competitors facing off for glory in the final Grand Slam tournament of the year. Entering this competition, four competitors are positioned as potential title contenders in this strong field. Per some markets, Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka is the odds-on favorite to take home the championship and continue what has been an excellent 2024. Meanwhile, five-time major champion, Iga Swiatek, is angling for her second-ever US Open title. She has already won the French Open this year. However, one player to watch out for because of home-field advantage is the American Coco Gauff who won the US Open last year in a spectacular flourish. Finally, a dark horse candidate in this event is Elena Rybakina who has a career-high singles ranking of No. 3 by the WTA.

For this article, SBS will explore what makes each contender stand out and also some more notes and info about women’s tennis wagering and beyond.

The No. 1 Contender: Aryna Sabalenka (Odds: +225)

Entering this tournament, Sabalenka is a former world No. 1 player in both singles and doubles tennis by the Women’s Tennis Association. Moreover, she has won two major singles titles, including back-to-back championship runs at the 2023 and 2024 Australian Opens. Known for her very aggressive style of play, Sabalenka often accumulates high numbers of winners and unforced errors. Additionally, with her height, she also has a very powerful serve. In 2024, she had already locked down the Australian Open title but had to withdraw from Wimbledon. That said, she did make the final round of the US Open last year and has an overall career mark of 21-6 at this legendary tournament which is good for a winning percentage of 78%.

The No. 2 Contender: Iga Swiatek (Odds: +350)

In 2024, Swiatek posted a strong record of 11-2 in Grand Slam events, but perhaps this number is bolstered mostly by her showing at the French Open. Moreover, while she is perhaps the face of women’s tennis, she is still looking for some separation at the top from her competitors. This includes the US Open where she won the tournament in 2022, but fell in the fourth round of the event last year. That said, she has been excellent in 2024 overall with a mark of 30-3 in WTA 1000 tournaments that has also netted her four wins in these events this year alone. This includes winning four of six tournaments earlier this year ranging from the Indian Wells Open to the Madrid and Italian Opens back-to-back.

Third Ranked Athlete: Coco Gauff (Odds: +750)

With seven career singles titles, including the 2023 US Open, along with nine career doubles titles, Gauff is one of the most impressive young stars in the sport. Still only 20 years of age, she has a career-high WTA ranking of world No. 2 in singles of world No. 1 in doubles which is amazing given her young age. This year, she has accrued a mark of 13-3 in Grand Slam events, which is one win away from her most wins all-time in a calendar year at Grand Slam tournaments. While she won the US Open last year, she would like to build on her mark of 14-4 at the tournament, especially with the event being on her home turf. She has made two Grand Slam semifinals this year, at the Australian and French Opens.

Final contender spotlight: Elena Rybakina (Odds: +900)

In her career to date, Rybakina has won eight titles on the WTA Tour, including two WTA 1000 titles. The 2022 Wimbledon champion, the fantastic athlete is aiming for her second-ever Grand Slam title with a fantastic victory here in New York City. This year, she has made it at least to the quarterfinals in two separate tournaments and has accrued a mark of 10-3 in major championship competition. The US Open, however, is perhaps her weakest tournament with an overall record of 4-5 (44%) at the event.
