Down in Alabama, a state senator is imploring Governor Kay Ivey to be a “major player” in the gambling solution in the Cotton State. As recently referenced in an article from 1819.com, Alabama State Senator Greg Albritton (R-Atmore) has said getting votes in the legislature continues to be a challenge. Albritton, who is also the Alabama Senate general fund budget committee chairman, said on a recent media appearance the failure by the House of Representatives to pass legislation had been the reason in the past for the lack of progress on the gaming issue. Moreover, Albritton said in the appearance that he is uncertain about the future of gambling in Alabama, but that could change with assistance and support from Governor Ivey.
In this article, SBS will be going over the latest gaming news coming out of Alabama along with some other thoughts and notes about wagering in the Cotton State.
In the article from 1819, Albritton talked about how he had only one vote in the Alabama state legislature and that he is “only one vote.” The senator pointed out that he did not have commitments from the House leadership or even from many House members as to which direction they want to take or they do not want to. He also pointed out that the group is still trying to see what Governor Ivey would want to do. Albritton said that is a problem since there are suggestions about the path forward for gaming at the state legislature level but they do not have the votes to move anything forward yet.
As the article notes, Albritton’s district includes the Poarch Band of Creek Indians’ Atmore gaming facility which would stand to benefit greatly from a state-wide gaming approval. In the interview, the senator from Atmore said that Governor Ivey would “have to play a role” in overcoming hurdles in the House of Representatives. Moreover, Albritton would go into detail saying that looking at the problems they have had in the House of Representatives in the state as far as getting votes, would be a big hindrance to any project moving forward. With that in mind, the senator said he thinks the Governor’s office is going to have to be a major player at some point in the near future if anything is going to be accomplished regarding a gaming resolution in the state.
In the report from 1819 and the interview with Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show,” Albritton mentioned that there needs to be a concerted effort by the executive branches of the state to move something forward. With that in mind, with betting veneers like GreeneTrack and Victoryland sorting out recently confronted legal hurdles to stay in business, perhaps those developments could mean a “once-and-for-all” legislative solution is in the works or things will stay at a standstill.
