In the state of Alabama, much like most of the Southeastern United States, football is the undisputed king. In fact, the king of kings in the state of Alabama is arguably the Alabama Crimson Tide football program. Leading the way for the Tide this past season and into next is 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. Following a tremendous 2021 campaign where Young piloted Alabama to an SEC Title and a 13-2 record, he is touted by numerous betting outlets as the top player to be selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. For instance, ProFootballTalk and also Global Circulate released a report earlier this week highlighting this gaming fact along with some other frontrunners for the No. 1 spot.

For this report, SBS goes into more depth regarding Young’s 2021 campaign and what his chances look like for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Some early betting lines favor Young over OSU’s Stroud

Per the spotlight article from Global Circulate and ProFootballTalk, the Alabama signal-caller is recognized as +200 betting favorite by some NFL betting outlets as the project first choice in 2023. During the 2021 season, Young was extremely impressive for the Crimson Tide as he threw for 4,872 yards and accounted for 50 overall touchdowns during the 2021 campaign. However, things can change quickly. For reference, Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler was the favorite for the same honor this time last year, and he got benched and later transferred to South Carolina. For right now, though, the Mater Dei product is the top choice for the next NFL Draft.

According to the article, following Young in the race for the projected No. 1 spot, next season is Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud (+210) and Alabama linebacker Will Anderson (+300). However, per BetOnline, Young (+250) and Stroud (+200) are actually flipped in their rankings for the 2023 NFL Draft’s first overall selection. If Young were to be selected as the No. 1 overall choice next season, he would be making even more history for Alabama. The last time a player from the Crimson Tide was chosen with the No. 1 pick was way back in 1948 when quarterback/halfback Harry Gilmer was selected by the Washington Redskins.

Young’s 2021 campaign was a blistering one for Alabama

Last season, the quarterback was above all others en route to the Heisman Trophy. In addition to taking home the Heisman (the first Tide quarterback to do so), college football’s highest honor, the now-junior signal-caller broke numerous Alabama passing records For instance, he holds the record for most passing yards in a single game by a Crimson Tide quarterback at 559 and also earned the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback. In addition to passing accolades in 2021, Young was also able to accrue three rushing scores for Alabama along the way.

Coupled with his personal goals, the quarterback’s biggest challenge next season will be winning another College Football Playoff National Championship for the Tide. After locking down the SEC Championship with a decisive 41-24 win over Georgia, Alabama came up short in the rematch against the Bulldogs in the title game, 33-18. If Young can have another year like he had in 2021 and there is no reason (outside of injury) why he would not, and can win a National Championship, then he will most likely be the first choice in next year’s NFL Draft.
