One of the most popular fiction characters of all-time, there will be a new James Bond in the near future and BetOnline has shared its betting odds on who will take the mantle next. Per the article, while the public still does not know when an official announcement will be made, speculation continues to grow over who will take on the legendary role of Agent 007. The title is considered one of the most glamorous roles in the industry and now the big question remains over who will take over the title from Daniel Craig. In the report, BetOnline explored a couple of Hollywood heavy-hitters from the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Tom Hardy to Henry Cavill and Damson Idris.

For this article, SBS will be going over the latest news and notes coming from BetOnline along with more news and information coming from the website and whatnot.

Taylor-Johnson is touted as the odds-on Bond favorite

As noted in the article, producers of the British spy series are trying to secure an actor who can sign on for a multi-film deal and are looking for someone under the age of 40. Per the article, Taylor-Johnson makes sense and the betting odds reflect this at +100. The 33-year-old has been featured in several films and also played John Lennon in Nowhere Boy. Moreover, he also won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Nocturnal Animals

In addition to Taylor-Johnson, Hardy (+400) was also included in the latest betting markets as a Bond favorite. For the last few years, the actor has been near the top of the betting board. The public loves this choice but others may not agree. Per the article, he definitely has the star power and British background but he’s older than what the producers are perhaps looking for. Hardy is 44 years old, a bit over the “under-40” range they are seeking. Additionally, he is listed as 5-foot-9 so he is shorter than Daniel Craig which perhaps makes this wager one to avoid despite his short odds.

Cavill and Idris are other notable names on the list

Also included in the report, Cavill (+800) has always been in the running for this role but he turned 40 last year and now could be more of a longshot to become James Bond. He has taken on massive roles in recent years playing Superman, Sherlock Holmes, and Napoleon Solo in the film adaptation of the 1960s TV spy series, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. So he has the experience of playing a spy character. Moreover, he was also in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and will be in another action spy film later this year

Another interesting contender in this list is Damson Idris (+1200) who received glowing reviews for his role in Snowfall, where he played teenage drug dealer Franklin Saint. The series followed Saint in the 1980s in L.A. with the rise of crack cocaine. The 32-year-old from London hit the screen in 2016 in the British thriller City of Tiny Lights and the following year made his American debut in the film Megan Leavey. He then won the Emerging Talent Award at the Screen Nation Fim and Television Awards and could be a bit of a sleeper to don the Bond tuxedo

Other actors spotlighted on this list as well

As noted in the report and on BetOnline, there are a variety of other famous actors that are in the running to be the next Bond leading man. Of course, one actor that jumps out is Idris Elba at +1000. In 2016, he was named in the Time 100 list of the Most Influential People in the World. Moreover, his films have grossed over $10 billion at the global box office. Moreover, he has received Primetime Emmy Awards for Oustanding Lead Actor along with Golden Globe awards as well. He has starred in a variety of films and TV shows from The Wire and Luther to American Gangster, Prometheus, and Suicide Squad.

Another name to watch here is Cillian Murphy at +500. The actor recently portrayed J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, for which he received the Academy Award for Best Actor along with a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award. Additionally, Murphy has received acclaim for his role as Tommy Shelby in the BBC period drama series, Peaky Blinders. He has also starred in Inception, Dunkirk, and as the Scarecrow in The Dark Knight trilogy. Of course, he is certainly a top choice here given all of his recent accolades and success, and could make for a compelling Bond fit if his schedule allows.
