Maryland Lottery shares six holiday-themed scratcher promotions

For fans of the holidays and the lottery, the Maryland Lottery organization has something special for consumers this winter. Per a recent report, the Maryland Lottery has introduced six new holiday-themed scratch-off tickets, along with a “Holiday Second-Chance Promotion,” in anticipation of the holiday season. The new scratch-offs, which became available in stores late last month, include a variety of games. These are Gift Tag Cash, It’s Gold Outside, Peppermint Payout, Holiday Luck Doubler, Snowflake Tripler, and Win $100, $200, or $500. In addition to these new holiday promotions, there are some new numbers the state of Maryland released as part of its September revenue totals that SBS will also share in this space below.

Lottery tickets offering an array of top game prizes 

Each ticket, the same article notes, offers various top prizes ranging from $500 to $100,000, with unique holiday-themed play mechanics. Gift Tag Cash, priced at $1, offers 41 top prizes of $500. The $2 “It’s Gold Outside,” features six top prizes of $10,000. Additionally, the $3 Peppermint Payout returns with six $30,000 top prizes, and the $5 Holiday Luck Doubler offers six $50,000 top prizes. The $10 Snowflake Tripler provides five top prizes of $100,000, while the $20 Win $100, $200, or $500 ticket is packed with over 71 million prizes between $100 and $500. 

September ‘24 revenue is Maryland’s best gaming month

In another report, the state of Maryland had the most lucrative month of its nearly three-year sports betting history as Maryland took in nearly $9.4 million in sports betting tax revenue. Additionally, the September 2024 tax revenues nearly tripled the September 2023 tax revenues as state sports bettors flocked to their apps during the first month of the football season. The state saw nearly a $4 million increase in sports betting tax revenues over August. 

As noted in other reports, Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported a total handle of $532,866,676 and $9,379,598 in sports betting tax revenues for the month. The nearly $9.4 million in tax revenue topped the previous monthly high that was set in January 2024, which was $8.2 million in revenue. It also tripled the $3.2 million tax revenue figure in September 2023. Additionally, there were actually more live operators in the state during January 2024 than in September 2024. In January the state had 12 online sports betting apps and 13 retail sportsbooks in operation compared with 11 online sports betting apps and 12 retail sportsbooks in the state last month.

According to the commission, through the first quarter of FY 2025 (July 2024 through September 2024), sports betting revenues for the state totaled $21.2 million, compared to $9.1 million for the same period in FY 2024

“We’re encouraged that the sports wagering market continues to generate additional funding to support schools, and at the same time, we also encourage everyone to be responsible about their betting,” Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin said in a press release. “Mobile wagering apps have tools that allow you to set limits on your activity. If you bet, please enjoy it in moderation and leave room to simply have fun watching the games and being a sports fan.” 

Meanwhile, FanDuel continued its run as the top operator in Maryland for yet another month, reporting $231.8 million in total sports betting handle and contributing $4.8 million in taxes. DraftKings remained the second most successful operator, notching $175.8 million in total handle and nearly $3 million in sports betting tax revenue. BetMGM remained in third, with $39.35 million in handle and a little over $652,000 in sports betting tax revenue.

Additionally, the article went over some other detailed handles and tax revenue totals for the month of September. This includes Bally’s at $3,093,813 and zero in tax revenue. Bingo World (BetRivers) registered a total of $6,269,408 in handle and $63,317 in tax revenue while Caesars Sportsbook scored $22,946,310 in handle with $207,732 in tax revenue. In terms of other notable outlets, ESPN BET registered $15,561,415 in handle with $218,456 in tax revenue, but SuperBook and Riverboat on the Potomac both received zero in handle and tax revenue for the month.
