Kyle Larson is rolling and oddsmakers very much like that fact that the NASCAR Cup Series leader is also rolling into a start around his favorite track. The Chevrolet driver is set as a solid +300 favorite to win Sunday’s South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Larson has won the past two NASCAR stops at this track, including last year’s South Point 400. Denny Hamlin (+750) is the second betting choice in this race.

With the NASCAR Cup Series playoff field being whittled down to eight drivers, Larson is among four former champions who are remaining in the hunt for the series championship. He won the NASCAR Cup Series title in 2021. Defending champion Ryan Blaney is also among the eight remaining contenders. Other former winners still in with a chance are Joey Logano (2018, 2022) and Chase Elliott (2020).
Sunday’s race will cover 267 laps and 400.5 miles. Stages are 80, 85 and 102 laps.
The NASCAR Cup playoff series began Saturday, September 8 at the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway with 16 drivers contending for the crown. After three rounds, they were cutting the field from 16 to 12 drivers. Three races later, the elimination of another four drivers from the playoff chase took place following last week’s Charlotte Roval.
Three races from now, entering the final race of the season, the NASCAR Cup Series Championship at Phoenix International Speedway on November 10, only the top four drivers in the standings will remain eligible to win the NASCAR Cup.
Larson and Christopher Bell are currently 1-2 in the NASCAR Cup standings, but they’ve certainly arrived at this destination in much different fashion. Larson has won a series-high six races this season. Meanwhile, Bell owns a NASCAR Cup Series best 20 top-10 finishes.
Let’s look at the top contenders for the NASCAR South Point 400 title.
The man at the wheel of the No. 5 Chevrolet is clutch. There’s no debating that fact. During the past three years, Larson has won five times over the last four races of the season.
With two straight wins at Las Vegas, they will all be chasing Larson on Sunday.
Is this the year that Hamlin finally drives his No. 11 Toyota to a career-first NASCAR Cup Series title?
It’s not looking promising at the moment. Hamlin has gone winless over the past 21 races. It’s been 10 races since he finished a race among the top three. However, he’s only finished outside the top 11 once in his past nine Vegas starts. That includes a win in this race in 2021.
The driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 Chevrolet is right there in the hunt every race. Byron won three of the season’s first eight races.
Although he’s winless since, Byron shows 12 top-10 finishes over that span. He’s finished 2-3-3 the past three races. He was a winner at Las Vegas in 2023. Byron has run in the top 10 in eight of the last nine races run on this track.
The NASCAR Cup Series regular-season champion, Reddick endured an up-and-down day in the final race before the cutdown to eight, and was fortunate to survive.
A first-stage win left him buoyant, until a second-stage wreck dropped all the way to the back of the field. Reddick fought his way through the field to finish 11th in the race and gain a spot in the top eight. He was second in the early-season race at Vegas.
Bell just won’t go away. That’s been his strategy all season long. On the one hand, the Joe Gibbs Toyota driver hasn’t won in 15 races.
However, Bell has finished in the top 10 in nine of the past 11 races. That includes a second, two thirds and a fourth. He’s always going to be a solid top-10 finish play in NASCAR prop betting.
The odds are stacked against a repeat by defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Blaney. You have to go back to Jimmie Johnson’s run of five straight titles from 2006-10 to find a driver winning back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series titles.
The Team Penske driver does have three top-10 finishes in his last four races, though. He was third here earlier this year.
Larson is a finisher, plain and simple. During his 2021 title-winning season, the Hendrick Motorsports driver won four of the last five races. His dominance on the Las Vegas circuit can’t be ignored.
He’s also arriving at his favorite track off a win in the Charlotte Roval. It’s that ability to get to the finish line first when it matters most that will make Larson the 2024 NASCAR South Point champion.
