Denny Hamlin has been known to get cooking when competing at Richmond Raceway in the NASCAR Cook Out 400. He’s won this race three times. That’s more than any active Cup Series driver.
As recently as last year, Hamlin ran second in this race behind only winner Chris Buescher. He’s finished among the top four in four of the past five Cook Out 400 races.
Depending upon which online sportsbook betting line you check, Hamlin is co-favored to win this race with Christopher Bell and Martin Truex Jr. Truex is a two-time winner of the Cook Out 400.

At Bovada, Truex, Hamlin and Bell are all the +500 chalk. It’s Hamlin and Bell that are sharing the +475 favorite’s role at Betonline. Only BetUS, which is going with Bell as the +450 betting choice, is deviating from this type of betting line and picking a distinct favorite.
For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of contending drivers, along with a predicted race winner, and additional information for your NASCAR wagers.
There’s just something about the super short 0.75-mile layout at Richmond Raceway that revs Hamlin’s engine. Along with his success in the Cook Out 400, he’s also been a winner the Richmond spring race, the Toyota Owners 400, twice in the past three years.
Overall, he’s won three races on this year’s circuit, second only to the four wins garnered by Cup Series leader Kyle Larson. Hamlin has won 54 races in his Cup career. That leaves the driver of the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing tied for 12th on the all-time wins list with Lee Petty, who won the first Cook Out 400 back in 1953.
Currently eighth in the driver standings, Bell shows three wins on his resume this season. Another Joe Gibbs Racing driver at the wheel of the No. 20 Toyota, Bell finished sixth in the Richmond spring race after starting 29th on the grid.
He ran 20th in last year’s summer race, but overall, Bell has been knocking on the door in search of his first Richmond win. His seven career Cup starts on the track show him running in the top 10 five times. That includes a second and a third.
Truex is a two-time winner of the Cook Out 400, in 2019 and 2021. He’s been on an outstanding run of success in this particular race. He’s never run worse than seventh place over the past five Cook Out 400 races, including a trio of top-three placings.
Truex is in need of that type of change of luck. Although he’s seventh in the Cup Series standings, the driver of the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing is still seeking his first win of 2024. It’s been 11 races since he was cracking the top five. Truex shows only two top-10 finishes since May.
It’s understandable that Joe Gibbs Racing drivers hold down all the spots as top favorites for this race. His drivers have won this race in three of the past six years and a record eight times overall.
Which Gibbs driver should you be betting, though? Truex has never won here since the race moved from the fall to the summer. Hamlin was the last back-to-back winner of the Cook Out 400, but that was in 2009-10.
Winless this season and 18th in the driver standings, Kyle Busch (+3300), another Gibbs driver, could really use a win. But we’re going to go with Bell. He’s been ready to win at Richmond for several years, and this is the year that the bell tolls for him.
