The fourth and final Grand Slam tennis event is set to kick off this week as the best in the world square off in New York City at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. On the men’s singles side of the bracket, Novak Djokovic returns as the presumptive favorite after taking home first-place honors during the 2023 edition of the U.S. Open. He is vying for a record-equalling fifth US Open title and also a record-extending 25th major title. However, he will face stiff competition from the likes of number one seed Jannik Sinner who is coming off a victory at the Cincinnati Open but has faced recent controversy off the court. Moreover, the rising star of the sport, Carlos Alcaraz, is aiming for a US Open Championship as well to add to his growing list of accolades.

In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from the top competitor in the men’s singles bracket this year at the 2024 U.S. Open.

The No. 1 Contender: Novak Djokovic (Odds: +225)

Coming into this event, Djokovic’s accolades need no introduction because he is firmly considered the best of all time at this point. Noted above, he has won a record 24 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, including a record ten Australian Open titles. At the US Open, he maintains a stellar record of 88-13 which is good for an 87% winning percentage to date. Of course, last year was one of his best all-time with a record of 27-1 which helped him score three different championships. However, he is still seeking his first major title of 2024 after narrowly losing in the final round of Wimbledon earlier this year.

The No. 2 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +225)

Another former World No. 1 singles player on this list, Alcaraz has notched a variety of accolades in his young career. This includes winning 15 ATP Tour-level singles titles along with four Grand Slam titles and five Masters 1000 championships. In terms of Grand Slam performances, he has been excellent in his young career, notching two titles this year (Wimbledon and the French Open) while also winning the US Open for his first Grand Slam title back in 2022. In 2024 alone, he has accrued an impressive mark of 18-1 in Grand Slam events, which is perhaps the best mark in the world to this point.

Third Ranked Athlete: Jannik Sinner (Odds: +300)

Sinner is currently ranked as the World No. 1 in men’s singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). This makes him the highest-ranked Italian singles player in history. He has had an excellent 2024 to date, notching a record of 16-2 in Grand Slam events, including winning the 2024 Australian Open. Moreover, he advanced to the semifinals of the French Open as well. In addition to his victory in Cincinnati, he also scored the win at the Miami Open earlier this year. With a win-loss tally of 22-3 in ATP Masters 1000 events, he has been excellent against most of the ATP this year and is in a great spot to take on the competition at the US Open where he has a modest career record of 10-5.

Final contender spotlight: Alexander Zverev (Odds: +700)

Ranked as the fourth-best seed in the tournament, Zverev is the 2020 Olympic Champion and also has won 22 ATP Tour titles in singles and two in doubles. This year, he has been fantastic at Grand Slam events with a record of 14-3, including making the final round of the 2024 French Open and the semifinals of the Australian Open. In recent years he has also been successful at the US Open by advancing at least to the quarter-finals on three different occasions since 2020. This includes making the final round of the event back in 2020 and getting to the quarterfinals last year. This year, he has won the Italian Open and also has posted a mark of 21-6 in ATP Tour Masters 1000 events. Perhaps this is the year he breaks through.

Prediction: An awesome event, look for Djokovic to make history once again and secure his unprecedented fifth US Open crown. Of course, Alcaraz and Skinner could make a run at the title, but the Joker has a great shot to win again.
