In a move that few saw coming, competitive eating and hot dog legends, Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi, are set to lock horns per sources later this summer. According to one report, entertainment rumors concerning a rematch between “legendary wiener eaters,” Chestnut and Kobayashi, have been swirling for months. Now though, it can be confirmed that the two will be reunited at a Labor Day hot dog eating contest titled: “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef” which will be broadcast live exclusively on Netflix. Per MyBookie’s main site, Chestnut is the initial favorite to win against Kobayashi at -600, while the prospective prize money consensus for the winner is over “$99,999.5” at -300. In addition to these two betting markets, the site has multiple other prop betting scenarios for this competition.

As noted in the same report, it was 2009 the last time these two competitive eating legends sat down together to decide who could down more dogs. When the dust settled, Chestnut’s net worth ballooned after he emerged victorious, making huge news here and abroad. Of course, much has transpired between then and now which is why this Labor Day showdown between the two is so highly anticipated. Since that time, Kobayashi had a highly publicized contract dispute with the Nathan’s Hot Dog organization. A week before their 2010 contest, he announced he would not compete due to the company’s insistence on signing an exclusive contract with them.
As noted in one report, if you are new to the world of competitive eating, competitors compete for prize money worldwide. This includes competitions “mowing down everything from tacos to Buffalo wings, and of course, hot dogs.” In this case, an exclusive deal with Nathan’s would have anchored the Japanese eating legend to the company and precluded him from earning money at other events. Back on July 4, 2010, Kobayashi was in attendance wearing a black shirt that said “Free Kobi”. However, once the contest was over, he heard the crowd chanting “Let him eat!” which caused the former champion to storm the stage only to be tossed off it by security and subsequently arrested.
Moreover, despite Kobayashi’s six consecutive victories at Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Competition, his picture no longer adorns the company’s “Wall of Fame”. The bad blood still lingers and so too does the memory of Kobi getting dethroned by Chestnut in their 2009 hot dog-eating clash.
As reported by one outlet, Kobayashi isn’t the only one “beefing” with Nathan’s. Chestnut had a falling out recently with Nathan’s after insisting he be allowed to eat a vegan hot dog from a rival company named “Impossible Foods!”. The request was so peculiar that some believe Chestnut, a 16-time Nathan’s hot dog champion, did it as a publicity stunt to bring attention to his new sponsor and its vegan product. Alas, neither Chestnut nor Kobayashi will be wolfing down franks this Fourth of July on Coney Island which perhaps makes this year’s event much less intriguing. Chestnut, also known as “Jaws,” holds the record with 76 buns and dogs eaten at the 2021 event while Kobayashi recently made news by saying he was retiring from competitive eating due to health concerns.
However, it does appear he has a little gas left in the tank as the 46-year-old is intent on avenging his 2009 loss to his now 40-year-old rival. Of course, this special will appear on Netflix and is slated as a “clash of the titans on Labor Day”.
