With the 2024 MotoGP season getting underway this past season, the racers are off and running in their quest to secure the 2024 MotoGP World Championship. The season started this past weekend with the Qatar Airways Grand Prix where Francesco Bagnaia (+250) was able to pull down the championship trophy with a spectacular performance. As of this article’s writing, he is second on the list though in terms of betting market favorites to secure the 2024 crown with his rival Marc Marquez (-133) being tabbed by some outlets as the odds-on favorite. Meanwhile, another Spanish racer, Jorge Martin (+500), is a dark horse contender to win the overall title this year after finishing in second place last season to Bagnaia. Finally, the last racer to keep an eye on per the markets is Enea Bastianini (+1100) who finished next to Marquez in the standings last year in 15th place.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from the latest top drivers this MotoGP season, a predicted championship winner this year, and also some more notes and information about wagering on MotoGP.

First Contender Spotlight: Marc Marquez (-133)

Nicknamed “el tro de Cervera” in his hometown, meaning the “Thunder of Cervera,” Marquez is by most accounts, one of the most successful motorcycle racers of all time with eight Grand Prix World Championships to his name. Of course, while he had a disappointing campaign last year, he is set for a big turnaround in 2024 thanks to his incredible racing acumen. Of course, thanks to his high-flying racing style he has missed races over the course of the season. He is often considered one of the greatest innovators of modern MotoGP racing thanks to his “exaggerated cornering technique” which has brought him success but also has caused him to miss races as well due to injuries like in 2020 and last year. He is seeking his first MotoGP World Championship and seventh overall since 2019.

Second Racer Spotlight: Francesco Bagnaia (+250)

As referenced above, Bagnaia won the season-opening race in Lusail and has been on a tear for the past couple of seasons. He is the 2022 and 2023 MotoGP World Riders’ Champion and was also the 2018 Moto2 World Champion. With 19 wins in 87 starts over the course of his MotoGP career, he has been a steady threat to win each race he enters. During the 2023 season, he won seven races. In fact, he scored seven consecutive top-three finishes to the end the 2023 campaign which propelled him to his second championship.

Third Contender Spotlight: Jorge Martin (+500)

A racer for Pramac Ducati, Martin finished in third place in Qatar this past weekend and has also been near the top of the leaderboard throughout his career. While he finished in second place last season to Bagnaia, the Spanish racer had an excellent year. He was one of two racers (along with Bagnaia), to score over 400 points (428) in the standings. Martin notched four victories last season to go along with nine top-five outings. An accomplished performer throughout his career, he is also known for winning the 2018 Moto3 World Championship along with the 2014 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup champion.

Last Athlete Spotlight: Enea Bastianini (+1100)

In our last racer showcase, Bastianini is a fantastic driver who has had some solid outings, the Italian racer is looking for a big showcase in 2024 after a somewhat disappointing 2023. The competitor won the 2020 Moto2 World Championship and has been in the MotoGP World Championship circuit since 2021. Moreover, he has scored five wins in 49 starts in his career, including nine different podium finishes. While he was unable to string together some strong races to start the 2023 season, he still finished in third place in 2022 along with notching a victory and three top-ten finishes to end last season.

Prediction: Another amazing season is underway and this is a wide-open competition for the title of best in MotoGP. With that in mind, the pick here is Bagnaia to pick up another world championship in 2024. While it would certainly be unprecedented for him to win again, he is a consistent athlete who can always compete for a title when healthy.
