Following a sensational title fight earlier this year in May, Chantelle Cameron and Katie Taylor are set to lock horns later this week in a championship rematch. In March of 2023, Cameron accepted a public challenge from the undisputed lightweight champion Taylor for a fighter for Cameron’s undisputed super-lightweight titles. During that matchup, Cameron emerged victorious via a majority decision in the hard-fought bout. Now, a rematch is again set for these combatants in Taylor’s native Ireland at the 3Arena in Dublin on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each fighter, a predicted winner, along with more notes and information about boxing wagering.
With an undefeated record of 18-0, Cameron enters this fight as a world champion in two weight classes. She is the current undisputed light-welterweight champion and was able to avenge her loss to Taylor earlier this year after she fell to the Irish fighter at the 2011 EU Championships in the semi-finals. A proud English fighter, she has won eight professional fights via knockout and her other 10 wins have come by way of decision. In her last five bouts, she has won via unanimous decision three times, TKO once (over Melissa Hernández), and once by majority decision (Taylor).
An orthodox striker, Cameron has a lot of offensive firepower at her disposal and is a crafty fighter who can score points in bunches. A fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme films, the English athlete is one who can etch her name among the all-time greats if she is able to hold off the aging Taylor once again. A former Muay Thai and kickboxing athlete, Cameron has been able to figure out all kinds of fighters in her combat career.
One of the most decorated female fighters in history, Taylor enters this fight looking for revenge in the rubber match with Cameron. Another two-weight world champion and the current undisputed lightweight champion, of only eight boxers in history (female or male) to hold all four major world titles in boxing (WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO) simultaneously. Known for her fast-paced and aggressive boxing style, she is hugely popular in her native Ireland and is credited as being one of the most influential figures in the world of female boxing.
Earlier this year and prior to her loss to Cameron, Taylor was ranked as the world’s best active female lightweight by BoxRec. Moreover, she was also credited as the best active female boxer, pound-for-pound by The Ring. In her amateur career, she won five consecutive gold medals at the Women’s World Championships. With a professional record of 22-1, she has also scored six knockout wins in her career. Could this be the rematch performance of her career? Time will tell.
Prediction: Perhaps the best female boxing fight of the year, Taylor vs. Cameron II will feature some sensational action. While this will be close, take Cameron to win again here thanks to her emphatic blueprint win in May and age advantage.
