On the women’s singles side of the US Open bracket, a couple of surprise contenders have emerged and are in contention to make history in New York City. In one of the semifinal matchups, Coco Gauff squares off against Karolína Muchová in what should be an excellent showcase as both athletes recently swept their quarterfinal opponents. Conversely, another Czech player, Markéta Vondroušová, has a tough quarterfinal battle with American Madison Keys but has also played excellently to date. Finally, the last name to keep an eye on is also perhaps the favorite in some circles, which is No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka who is looking for her second Grand Slam title in 2023.

In this report, SBS will be taking a closer look at what each contending athlete brings to the table and also some more notes about tennis wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Coco Gauff (Odds: +250)

As noted above, Gauff has emerged as the favorite in this tournament thanks to some sensational outings. This includes her quarterfinal thrashing of Jeļena Ostapenko (6-0, 6-2) and the sixth overall seed has not slowed down much at all. Still only 19 years of age, this is Gauff’s best performance at the US Open to date and she made the finals of the 2022 French Open last year. With top seed Iga Świątek falling in the fourth round, this could be Gauff’s opportunity to capture her first Grand Slam championship.

The No. 2 Contender: Aryna Sabalenka (Odds: +300)

The top seed remaining in the tournament, Sabalenka just missed being recognized as the top contender on our list. While she did not make the top spot, the Belarusian star has still powered through this tournament, sweeping every opponent she has faced in straight sets. Moreover, while she still has some work to do, she has the momentum on her side in her quarterfinal battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen.

Third Ranked Athlete: Karolina Muchova (Odds: +600)

Muchova enters the semifinals in a battle with Gauff for a chance to advance to her first-ever US Open final. The Czech star is coming off a dominant performance in the quarterfinals over Sorana Cîrstea, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Indeed with the momentum behind her, this will be an excellent clash against the American, Gauff.

Final contender spotlight: Marketa Vondroušová (Odds: +650)

Our last athlete overview, Vondroušová has also bulldozed the competition this tournament, sweeping his first three opponents in straight sets. In her fourth-round matchup against Peyton Stearns, she was able to overcome an early deficit and turned into a back-to-back set sweep. The 2023 Wimbledon champion, she has had an excellent 2023 in her breakout year.

Prediction: All of these athletes have excelled at one time or another this tournament, but this is Gauff’s time to shine and break through for a major title.
