A titanic battle of champions is slated for later this month in Las Vegas as Canelo Álvarez puts up his super middleweight gold against undisputed junior middleweight champion, Jermell Charlo. In a surprise move, Charlo was initially set to face Tim Tszyu this year, but the bout was postponed twice. That said, earlier this summer, reports surfaced that instead of Tszyu, Charlo would square off against the undisputed super middleweight champion, Álvarez. This bout is set for the American to challenge for the super middleweight belts and thus, he will be stripped of his recently won WBO light middleweight title. With both fighters featuring immaculate records, Álvarez at 59-2-2 and Charlo registering a mark of 35-1-1, this bout should be an excellent one.
In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each fighter along with more notes and information about boxing wagering.
Coming off a great win over John Ryder in Mexico, Álvarez is still positioned as one of the top fighters in all of boxing. Recognized as a very dominant fighter, the native of Guadalajara, Mexico is known as a fearsome counterpuncher. Moreover, the champion is a powerful body puncher who has scored 39 knockout victories in his fantastic career. While Álvarez’s accolades have certainly been covered in this space at length before, it does bear mentioning that the champion has only lost twice – recently to Dmitry Bivol last year (a light heavyweight bout), and to Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013.
Moreover, looking closer at the champion’s record, he has never lost at the super middleweight level (his loss to Mayweather was for the (super) light middleweight title). Indeed, he will present a very formidable foe for Charlo as he comes up the 168-pound weight class to challenge Álvarez.
Fresh off an undisputed light middleweight title defense KO performance against Brian Castaño, Charlo is gearing up for the biggest fight of his career to date. Known as “Iron Man,” the Louisiana native is currently recognized as the world’s best active light middleweight by multiple publications including The Ring and ESPN. With 19 knockout victories to 16 decision wins, the American has a healthy blend of scoring KOs and scoring high on the judge’s scorecards. Moreover, his victory over Castaño was a nice piece of retribution for the light middleweight champion as he fought him to a draw in 2021 in San Antonio.
Since losing to Tony Harrison back in 2018 at the Barclays Center, Charlo has been on a tear. He has won multiple light middleweight title fights, including a revenge win over Harrison the following year along with championship wins against Jeison Rosario and Castaño. This will be a bigger test though as he has fought at light-middleweight for the majority of his career and will be bulking up to take on Álvarez.
Prediction: An excellent boxing showcase, take Álvarez to win here given his dominance in the weight class and Charlo moving up to fight him after anticipating fighting Tszyu the majority of the year.
