In the realm of college football, there might not be a more remarkable story right now than what is going on in Boulder, Colorado. Under the leadership of head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, the Buffaloes are the talk of the sports world thanks to a dazzling 2-0 start to the year. This is not just any early season undefeated streak, Colorado was a woeful 1-11 last year and were routinely blown in each game they played. However, this year has been an amazing turnaround with two signature wins in the bag, first against the CFP National Championship game runner-up TCU (45-42 on the road) and then a thumping of Nebraska last weekend. In the Buffs’ way now is head coach Jay Norvell and his Colorado State Rams who are looking for a huge upset win on the road.
For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each team along with a prediction and more notes about college football betting.
Team Spotlight: Colorado
As alluded to above, Colorado is a completely different team than they were one season ago. Coach Prime has the squad rolling and even had the legendary Wu-Tang Clan in attendance for the Buffs’ thrashing of the “much improved ” Cornhuskers in Boulder. The Colorado attack has been spearheaded by dynamic quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Deion’s son. In two games this season, Sanders has been electric, throwing for an average of 451.5 yards per game and seven total scores. In fact, the Colorado offense has relied heavily on the arm of Sanders with their rushing game only accruing 56.5 yards on average across two games.
Another player to watch on the Buffs is do-it-all playmaker, Travis Hunter. The defensive back and wide receiver turned heads in week one with a shutdown performance over TCU that also included a critical goal-line interception. In addition to Hunter, the Colorado secondary features Deion’s other son, Shilo, as the leading safety for the Buffaloes. He is the leading tackler on the team with 15 total stops, including 12 solo tackles. While the Colorado defense can be vulnerable at times, they did give up 42 points against TCU, this is a squad that is playing with a ton of swagger and extreme confidence.
Team Spotlight: Colorado State
Opposing Colorado will be their in-state rivals, the Colorado State Rams. A squad that is in need of some soul-searching, CSU was abysmal last year in Norvell’s first season at the helm. With only two wins last year, the Rams are supposedly a notch better this year, but their first game was tough to watch. In a 50-24 shellacking at home, CSU was blistered by Washington State, giving up 556 total yards. While the Rams did account for 320 yards passing of their own, it was not enough to slow down the Cougs, who outscored CSU 29-3 through three quarters.
In terms of players of note for Colorado State, a couple of former Nevada Wolf Pack players headline their skill positions. Running back Avery Morrow is the lead tailback for the Rams and is looking to improve on his 29-yard outing against Wazzu. Wide receiver Tory Horton, an all-Mountain West honoree is the key to the Rams passing attack and an excellent receiver who could play on Sundays. What is peculiar though is that incumbent starter Clay Millen was replaced by another Nevada transfer Bradyen Fowler-Nicolosi. The latter was serviceable in last week’s loss, accounting for 210 yards along with two scores and one pick.
Prediction: This game should be an excellent showcase of what the Buffaloes can do against inferior opponents, take Colorado to win big at home.
