The premier professional golf team match play event, the 2023 Ryder Cup is slated for the end of next month with some of the best players in the world joining forces. The 44th edition of the Ryder Cup is set for the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy as Team U.S.A. takes on the European all-stars (unofficial title). Early on in the Ryder Cup 2023 process, two-time major championship winner Zach Johnson was named as the U.S. team captain while Luke Donald was selected to lead the Europeans. The Americans have since added veterans Steve Stricker, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk, and Fred Couples as first through fourth vice-captains. Conversely, for the European team, Thomas Bjørn and Edoardo Molinari were named by Stenson as vice-captains while Nicolas Colsaerts has also joined the squad.

For this report, SBS will be going over the various outcomes for the 2023 Ryder Cup and also cover some more notes and information about PGA betting.

Team Spotlight: USA

For the United States squad, they are aiming for their first Ryder Cup win overseas since 1993 when Raymond Floyd and Payne Stewart led the Americans to victory. For much of the competition’s history, the Americans dominated the sport, especially in the 20th century. That said, the Europeans have won seven of the 10 Ryder Cups contested since 2000. Nonetheless, the veteran star power for the Americans will be solid here. Love is a major championship winner (1997 PGA Championship) and has captained two other Ryder Cup squads, in 2012 (a European win) and 2016 (a victory for the Americans).

Furyk, winner of the 2003 U.S. Open, is another veteran presence to keep an eye out for. The 2010 PGA Tour Player of the Year, he should be a nice steadying presence for the Americans as they look to make history. Given the 2021 matchup and also current world golf rankings, it is fair to assume the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Colin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas will also be on the 2023 American squad. Johnson especially would like another crack at a Ryder Cup to improve on his record at the tournament and all of these players have won major championships in recent years.

Team Spotlight: Europe

For the Europeans, having a home-field advantage will be a key element in this year’s Ryder Cup. The Europeans are a perfect 5-0 in Ryder Cups held across the Atlantic and have been able to hold off the Americans consistently for each competition. In addition to the aforementioned captains above, the Europeans should be able to feature some of the world’s best players as well. The 2021 edition of the team boasted the likes of major winners Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, along with a slew of top-20 players like Tyrrell Hatton and Viktor Hovland.

With that in mind, the potential roster of the American side is more formidable than what the Europeans might field. The U.S. won the 2021 Ryder Cup, 19-9 and the Europeans were unable to mount much of a counteroffensive against the American star power. While this of course could change in Italy given the rise of young European players like Rahm, Hatton, Hovland, and Tommy Fleetwood, the Americans seemed to have them figured out at Whistling Straits. Nonetheless, you cannot count out the European squad this year given the strong home-field advantage

Team Outcome: Tie

Since 1927, there have only been two ties in the history of the competition. The last time there was a deadlocked Ryder Cup was in 1989 when Europe retained their title in England. While this could still happen in 2023, out of 43 total occurrences and there being only two ties, this has some long odds for a reason.

Prediction: With the vast majority of the U.S. roster set to return from the win in 2021, this is the year the Americans win the Ryder Cup on European soil
