One of the biggest tournaments of the year, the PGA Tour heads over the Atlantic for the 2023 Open Championship where anyone has a shot to take home the title. This will be the 151st edition of the Open (aka the British Open) after Cameron Smith won last year’s tournament. For this year’s edition, it will be a cast of familiar favorites at the top of the leaderboard looking for a title. The favorite for the 2023 tournament is Rory McIlroy (+800) who is coming off a win at the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open this past weekend. Trailing him is the trio of Scottie Scheffler (+1000), Jon Rahm (+1000), and Brooks Koepka (+2000). The latter two players have already won major championships this year with Rahm winning the Masters and Koepka locking down the title at the PGA Championship.
In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of the contending players at the 2023 Open Championship, who will win, and also more notes about PGA wagering.
Favorites to win the 2023 Open Championship (British Open) | |||
---|---|---|---|
Rory McIlroy | +800 | +800 | +800 |
Scottie Scheffler | +1000 | +1000 | +1000 |
Jon Rahm | +1000 | +1000 | +1000 |
Brooks Koepka | +2000 | +2000 | +2000 |
As referenced above, McIlroy is riding a hot streak heading into this tournament, locking down his 24th PGA Tour win this past weekend in Scotland. Moreover, the 34-year-old has won this tournament before, doing so back in 2014. Overall at the Open Championship, he has finished in the top five six times, including two third-place showings and one-second place finish. Indeed, the 2022 FedEx Cup champion certainly has earned the spot of being the number-one favorite heading into the showdown at Royal Liverpool.
The winner of the 2023 Players Championship, Scheffler is also the current world number one player and has held that position on and off since March 2022. In addition to his victory at the Players, he also won his second WM Phoenix Open earlier this year in February. The winner of the 2022 Masters Tournament, Scheffler is aiming to improve on his tied for 21st place finish last year at the Open Championship.
Recognized as the 2021 PGA Player of the Year, Rahm has been a steady favorite on the circuit to win each tournament he enters. While he finished in a disappointing 34th place at last year’s Open Championship, he was able to finish within the top three in 2021. Moreover, in terms of major championship performances this year, his performances have been a bit of a mixed bag with a win at Augusta, but a 50th place finish at the PGA Championship. This could be a boom or bust outing for Rahm.
Kopeka stunned the golf world by winning the 2023 PGA Championship earlier this year, his third time ever winning the event. That said, he has been on a hot streak this year since a down performance in 2022 where he finished above 50 twice and missed the cut twice as well. In addition to his win at the PGA, he finished tied for second at the Masters and tied for 17th at the U.S. Open as well.
Prediction: Scheffler has been waiting his turn of the golfers above to lock down another major title and he will do so with a big outing at the 2023 Open Championship.
